Book Description

March 1, 2011
Simple Knitting is a unique workshop-based, how-to-knit book that will teach you the key techniques while creating an enviable collection of knitted items. Each of the 20 projects in the book teaches a new skill, as well as building upon and consolidating those knitting techniques already learned through preceding projects. With a series of workshop-style masterclasses Erika Knight explains all the essential information--from achieving a perfect tension and substituting yarns or stitch textures, to more advanced cables and shaping--alongside broader design principles, such as building a color palette.
Providing a unique opportunity to learn the design secrets of one of the world's most highly-respected knitwear designers, Erika shares her special tricks of the trade within this book. Erika's signature style, for which she has become renowned worldwide, is her sophisticated simplicity. Simple Knitting is the embodiment of that elegant reductivism. Her designs prove that you can make wonderful, original items for your home and yourself at the same time as mastering a repertoire of skills. Likewise, her preference for a refined natural palette of earthy shades with the odd highlight hue is perfectly in tune with the current mood for relaxed, homely interiors.
With inspiring photography by Yuki Sugiura that showcases each of the beautiful designs, supported with clear charts and artwork, Simple Knitting is the ultimate learn-to-knit book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Knitting March 31, 2011
Format:Paperback
I don't think I've seen a better knitting book for beginners (and intermediates, too). Knight offers one of the best books available. The pictures are beautiful, inspiring, and refreshing, plus I adore the color palette Knight used. As the title implies, there are 20 projects: muffler, pillows, fair isle pin cushion, socks totes, sweater, notebook cover, hats, mittens, scraves, and a tea cozy. Before you get into the patterns, there is a stitch library with lovely sample photos, yarn descriptions, materials information, and some basic how-tos. Combining the basic patterns with the stitch library will offer you loads of ideas and projects.

I will recommend this books to my knitting students as the best first book and the perfect foundation to your knitting library. In fact (especially for new knitters) if you can only buy ONE book this year -- this is IT! The big appeal to me it the patterns are simple, classic, and something I would actually use. Is this something for the intermediate or advanced knitter? Well, you could probably pick up a few tips, but the patterns are fairly basic and intented to entice those new to knitting. Having said that, I consider myself an intermediate knitter and see many projects that I'd like to complete.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice beginner's workshop... July 11, 2011
Format:Paperback
...but all the skills taught here are as well-covered, or more so, in free internet sites like knittinghelp.com. Likewise, equivalent patterns are available for free from the websites of yarn companies. Knight provides sample schematics for the two sweaters in the book, but they're in the instructional section at the beginning, rather than with the sweaters themselves, and don't include all the sizes. That seems like a shame, since fit has so much to do with whether a beginning knitter is happy with the results and continues to knit. There's no index, and the table of contents isn't detailed enough to compensate; to find a particular stitch or technique, the reader has to flip through the first sixty pages.

The photos are handsome, however, and are likely to whet the appetite of a beginning knitter. This would make a good gift for an adult who wants to learn to knit; so much classier than Knitting for Dummies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book! January 13, 2012

I checked and rechecked and rechecked . . . this book out of the library. I finally have to buy my own copy. It is great for beginners, or for those of us who just need a refresher course or a great reference guide. The projects range from simple to challenging and they are timeless in their design! Thanks for a great book!
