Book Description

July 3, 2003
Dinah Steward has a secret. Hidden beneath the comfortable family life she shares with her successful husband Matthew and their two sons lies a shameful secret that has haunted Dinah for fifteen years. She and Matt never speak of it or the impossible choice he forced her to make all those years ago: they think the cracks have been papered over. But when a chance encounter brings the past into sharp focus once more, Dinah realises she can no longer deny the truth. She decides to risk everything - her husband, her sons, her perfect lifestyle, in order to claim what was always hers.

About the Author

Rosie Thomas writes for magazines and newspapers as well as her fiction. When not writing she spends her time travelling and mountaineering. In 1997 she competed in the Peking to Paris Motor Rally, and she has climbed Mont Blanc as well as travelling to Everest and the Antarctic.

From AudioFile

A comfortable life in Franklin, Massachusetts, for Dinah Steward, her scientist husband and their two sons is a promise. But their career move from England has not eradicated a secret that may undermine this comfortable life forever. Clare Higgins is a gifted reader. There's never a question of which character is speaking because she is thinking as that character would think. She shifts accents and vocal tones easily without making anyone sound unappealing. She enters the mind of every character and presents their feelings with clear sympathy. J.P. An AUDIOFILE Earphones Award winner. 5.0 out of 5 stars Touching story-beautifully written from the heart., March 7, 2001
This review is from: A Simple Life (Audio Cassette)
Rosie Thomas's story of a mothers love for the child she gave up for adoption is heartwarming. Her shame of this secret eats away at her until she finds the courage to do something about it. Her characters spring to life and are so real you can "see" them. In this audio version, Clare Higgins switches from character to character with ease and panache. Dinah's life comes full circle, and I'm so glad I was along for the ride. A must!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Simple Life, November 9, 2006
By
This review is from: A Simple Life (Paperback)
I've read many books by Rosie Thomas and thoroughly enjoyed them - all very different though, but all remarkably well researched. I enjoyed A Simple Life too, but not one of my favourites by her. I found it a little implausible in parts and somewhat predictable. I bought it on the basis of rave reviews by other readers, so was slightly disappointed. However, if you're looking for a good read, which is not too taxing, then this will be good for you. Maybe a good one to put in a suitcase to read on the beach.
