I'm not sure if a book on accounting has ever hit the best seller list before, but Greg Crabtree's Simple Numbers, Straight Talk has completely changed the way I think and might be the book that makes the biggest impact on my life and business in 2012! I've had masters level accounting courses, visit my business book keeper and accountant monthly and keep detailed planned and actual budgeting spreadsheets. However, despite all that knowledge and effort, it wasn't until reading Crabtree's Simple Numbers, Straight talk that my eyes were opened and I was given the tools to effectively manage my expenses, salaries and revenues to run a profitable business. Simple Numbers is an easy read that can be consumed in one or two days and is a must read for every business owner and entrepreneaur! Thank you Greg for this contribution which will make a positive impact on so many lives and businesses around the world!

Like some others here, I'm a bit skeptical on his view of owner salary vs savings on SS taxes, but at a minimum you should at least look at the numbers based on a "real world" market salary for the owner and not the $30K you are paying yourself in salary to avoid taxes. In the end it's the Dave Ramsey principle that emotion and motivation are part of the equation. Greg maintains that what you will profit if you stick to his system will FAR outweigh those extra SS taxes.

This view was actually hard for me to look at because I my accounting picture wasn't quite as rosy as I thought it was, but now I have some good ideas how to tackle the issues and make it more profitable. More profitable doesn't always mean more revenue either. It may just mean more efficiency.

I have read all sorts of business books from E-Myth to Good to Great, etc. As the E-Myth would explain, I'm a technician that went into business without a clue about how to run one though somehow I've made it 11 years and been profitable the whole way. This book, like no other I've read, gives me some insight into the P&L and how to use it as a guiding light. It explains how to look at labor efficiency when I had no clue what that was.

At a minimum you will come away with some new ways to look at your accounting numbers that might just show you which employees are making you money and which ones are not.

This book went quickly for me. Read it in two days. If you are trying to make your business more efficient, I think you'll love it.

As anyone who has run a small business wil tell you, the only secret to success is managing cash and managing it well! But how do you get to good cash management? Greg Crabtree writes about these secrets in this short but very useful and informative book - Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits!. Greg writes about the four secrets of making a small business financially successful - Calculating and paying yourself an Owners Salary without fail, how keeping pre-tax profits above 10% being the only way to be successful, making sure that the labor you hire is productive enough to justify their numbers, and managing the four core cash flow forces - Taxes, Debt, Core Capital and Distributions. Greg raises and discusses some very important points in this bok under the above topics (plus some more about reporting numbers, etc) but the core concepts are extremely essential. Many small businesses are run on blind trust and faith while the numbers are telling you a different story and you don't listen to them properly! Especially making sure that the numbers add up enough to justify paying yourself a decent salary and the people you hire are justified in their being there!

Sweat Equity is great if the payoff is certain in the future and large enough to justify all the sacrifices you make! Greg is not against it but once you take investment money from others, you will have to make sure that everybody's time and effort, including yours is rewarded appropriately! Taking too much money away from investments to pay yourself is not fair to your investors while not taking any is not fair to yourself!

The levers of taxes, debt, capital and distributions are critical to managing cash since you could run out of cash even if you are profitable on the books!

This is an excellent book. It came yesterday, so interesting and useful, I finished it today. Few places I do not agree with the Author, but overall this is perfect one for those who is new to starting the business.

I have seen many businesses fail without proper accounting. If they follow the advice provided by Author, it will help them turn to profit.

I would say TRUE Original work, Master piece.

PS:Please do not mind the one star. I think it was not provided properly.

Seriously I am a huge fan of this book. Its made for companies under 10 million though - but it actually gives real useful actionable information.

I have read most every business book out there, all the book from Jim Collins and so on.

This book is BETTER for the average business. Why? Because it actually tells you specifically what to do according to the authors consulting practice.

So if you are not an accountant then this is a great resource and super easy read
