This beautiful instructional book has clear, concise directions for "machine" embroidery with silk ribbon!!!!!! Since I do not own, nor can I afford a NEW embroidery machine, imagine my delight to discover this book that I can use my 30-year old Kenmore zig zag machine!!!!!!!!
The photographs are gorgeous! And there are many ideas for use of this technique. Thanks for may opinion.

I just got this book. I have not done any of the exercises in the book but can hardly wait to start! Very clear instructions. Lovely color pictures clearly show how to do each step. Written directions add clarity. She makes use of clock settings for exact placement of ribbon for each element in silk embroidery designs.

Breathes new life into old machines,

This review is from: Simple Silk Ribbon Embroidery by Machine: Step-by-Step Techniques for Beautiful Embellishments (Paperback)
My sewing machine is old. Old, old, old. It's a basic heavy-duty model that comes with 3 stitches: straight, zig-zag, and buttonhole, leaving very little room for creativity. For almost 5 years now I've been ogling the WOW THESE COST A LOT embroidery machines, then the THESE ARE STILL HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS computerized sewing machines with lots and lots of programmed decorative stitches, many of which I'd probably not use anyway.
Well, somehow this year has turned into the year of, "Hey, My Machine Can Do That!" with the introduction of presser feet I was unaware of, needles I was unaware of, threads I was unaware of... you get the idea. Looking at the lovely pictures online of this book and my giant stash of ribbons, I thought I might make 2 or 3 of the designs in the book before I got bored and moved on to something else. Frankly, the designs are not my style at all, but I thought I might get some use out of a few of the techniques. Boy was I wrong! The projects are lavishly photographed and described at length, even with a bit of humor to help you remember important steps. Humor always helps in learning, doesn't it? The techniques can easily be converted into designs for clothing, which is primarily what I make, without looking like you're wearing a giant picture of flowers on your back. It's probably the most impressive book on techniques that I've read in recent years - and I did read it cover to cover before I tried any of the projects. I'd recommend doing the projects within the book so you can get the techniques down (all the photos really help!), then adapt the ideas to things you already sew. Don't sew pictures of ribbon flowers? Neither do I; use those techniques to embellish something else, making it look like it cost a heckuva lot more than it would have otherwise. And all for the price of a book and your ribbon scraps. Neato!
