More About the Author

David Steinman is the acclaimed environmentalist, health consumer advocate and author who founded the Green Patriotism movement. His major books include Diet for a Poisoned Planet (1990), The Safe Shopper's Bible (1995), Living Healthy in a Toxic World (1996), and Safe Trip to Eden: Ten Steps to Save the Planet Earth from the Global Warming Meltdown (2007), the book that introduces the concept of Green Patriotism.

In 1986, Steinman testified before Congress as an expert witness on the levels of chemical contaminants in the blood of fishermen and women eating locally caught fish from the Santa Monica Bay. His landmark human blood study, published in the Journal of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, led to the historic local movement to clean up the Santa Monica Bay. From 1989 to 1991, Steinman represented the public interest as a member on the safe seafood committee of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine where he advised Congress on safe seafood legislation and coauthored Seafood Safety (National Academy Press, 1991).

Since 1996, Steinman has been an advisory board member for The Green Guide Institute, a national non-profit, organization for consumer research and information run by Wendy Gordon Rockefeller. In 1997, Steinman founded Freedom Press, a publishing house for environmental and health books and magazines, and he is editor-in-chief of the popular national magazine The Doctors' Prescription for Healthy Living.

In 2000, Steinman served as Chairman of Citizens for Health, a national nonprofit consumer advocacy group known as the voice of the natural health consumer.

Since Diet was published in 1990, Steinman has been a popular consumer health advocate in the media on TV, radio and in the press. He has won awards for his reporting from the California Newspaper Publishers Association, the Sierra Club, and the Society of Professional Journalists ('Best of the West: Environment and Natural Resources Reporting').

David Steinman is married with three children and lives in California.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressive Collection of Green Ideas, January 10, 2008
By
This review is from: 50 Simple Steps to Save the Earth from Global Warming (Paperback)
I'm quite impressed with this book I found at Barnes & Noble this week. It's extremely comprehensive and includes many green ideas that I have never heard before. Most of the 50 steps include a list of suggestions, so there must be several hundred ideas.

The book's suggestions are very practical and specific: for example, it talks about a company that will install solar power in your home at no cost and will charge you the same amount monthly that you currently pay for electric (and keep your payments at that same rate for up to 25 years).

There is a considerable amount of explanation why the steps are helpful. The Frequently Asked Questions section gave me a better understanding of greenhouse gases, global temperatures and global warming than I had before. And it gave examples of how mankind has achieved some success in reversing atmospheric trends in the past (the ozone layer and air pollution) to explain why we should be confident we can make an impact in the fight against global warming.

I also liked the section that explains how to use the book, and suggests ways to reward yourself for meeting your green goals. I think this book would be helpful for people who want to change a few things in their life or those who want to go green in every category. It will also help people to understand why environmentalists are making choices like buying organic food and clothing, and avoiding products that use petroleum, petrochemicals and petrochemical pesticides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped Me with My New Year's Resolution!, January 16, 2008
By
Patricia Stevenson (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 50 Simple Steps to Save the Earth from Global Warming (Paperback)
Global warming has freaked me out. So for 2008, I made a commitment to become more aware of what I could personally do to curtail global warming and to make changes. Out of all the books I looked at, I chose this one becasue it seemed really straight forward--there wasn't a lot of "fluff" (i.e.,rich celebrities telling me how they went green--although I'm all for the cause). I'm happy to say that it has proved to be a great resource for me in keeping my resolution. I've already taken a few steps and I plan to take more! It kind of lit my fire and now my family is getting on board, too. It has made me so aware of all the green choices I can make every day now. This book has helped me to take action and I'm really REALLY happy to be part of the solution rather than feeling helpless. It contains lots of suggestions that don't cost a fortune. Very handy--I highy recommend it. If I had read it sooner, I would've given it as a Christmas gift to all my friends!!! Oh well, next year...

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple is right!, January 10, 2008
This review is from: 50 Simple Steps to Save the Earth from Global Warming (Paperback)
I love the easy-to-use format of the book. It is compiled into brief sections that are packed full of important information.

The book is so positive, it seems that the Earth really can be saved from global warming, if everyone would just take the first baby steps! The inclusion of online resources make everything seem all the easier to achieve.

My favorite suggestions are the steps that not only save the environment, but save money too, another precious resource!
