Book Description

June 1, 2009
Simple Student Ministry fine tunes the proven methods of #1 best seller Simple Church for the unique field of youth discipleship.Coauthor Eric Geiger, who contributed to the latter, takes a step forward here, neatly unpacking the key ideas of Clarity, Movement, Alignment, and Focus that will transform any over-stimulated youth program into a simpler, more results-oriented spiritual development process. Fun is still allowed, by all means, but the ultimate emphasis on maturing faith is simply essential.

The anecdotal comparisons are current and on-target (Starbucks’ well-publicized decision to retrain baristas in coffee making introduces the idea that youth leaders might also be wise to revisit the gospel essence of their ministry). And case study data gleaned from small to mega churches and parachurch ministries will give every youth leader a relatable reference point from which to begin the successful metamorphosis to Simple.

The old adage (from the Book of Ecclesiastes) says: "There is nothing new under the sun." Perhaps ... until you read Simple Student Ministry. Although I say that tongue-in-cheek (because Solomon was a very wise man), Simple Student Ministry is, in many ways ... new. I have read a number of books on student ministry, and I must admit that I was slightly skeptical before reading this one. "What can I learn that I have not picked up after 25 years of youth ministry?"

But Simple Student Ministry is new ... and unique. In fact, authors Eric Geiger and Jeff Borton stipulate many things you may already know about student ministry. They endorse (and critique) the things already known and accepted about student ministry; but their suggestions offer a new and fresh perspective on student ministry that are just that ... new and fresh.

Simple Student Ministry is built on a solid Biblical foundation, that integrates the principles Jesus and His disciples exemplified, and weaves those principles into a practical application that can be contextualized and implemented in your own ministry. The book is replete with many relevant and practical examples through illustrations, real life stories and analogies; as well as through case studies, personal experiences, and lessons learned from their own ministry.

As Geiger and Borton point out, Simple Student Ministry is not "just another model of youth ministry" or cool ideas for "programming." There are many books written to address those elements of student ministry. But rather, it emphasizes a discipleship process as the driving factor behind your programming that could revolutionize how you do ministry to students.

They are writing to help keep your ministry to students focused on developing them as leaders for the future - helping young people become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. And that does not happen through yet another great program or a novel idea for a model. It happens through having a clear and intentional plan for discipleship, built on the model of Jesus and His disciples. And that, in my opinion, is the uniqueness of this book. And that's what makes this book ... "a new thing under the sun." Your ministry will be greatly enhanced if you apply the principles articulated in this great book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful February 1, 2010
Format:Paperback
Geiger has done a good job of helping youth ministries think strategically. Definitely worth a read. HOWEVER, if this is the only book you read while redesigning your student ministry, you will be left wanting. This book should be paired with Barna's "Growing True Disciples". Simple Student Ministry will inspire you to streamline your disciple-making efforts. Growing True Disciples will help you press that decision down at a more detailed level.

5.0 out of 5 stars It was great...a lot of help!! July 4, 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is great. I've been a student pastor for about 10 years now and have been reading any resources that I can get. This book has a lot of things that I've been thinking about for a few years now. I often thought that we're doing a lot of things that don't meet our goals and just keep us busy.

If you're looking for a book that will not only tell you about a different way of doing student ministry but also give you specific ways to carry that out, then this is the book for you.

You won't regret getting and reading this book. Your ministry will be helped for doing this.
