It's not often an artist in the prime of her career takes six years to turn out an album. And if you've read anything at all about Grant's personal challenges during that period, the lapse is understandable.

After a half dozen years of anticipation, expectations are bound to be running very high. And when it comes to Amy's voice and performance on this album, her fans won't be disappointed. Grant sounds better than ever on this disc, which is a showcase of her ever-increasing vocal maturity and stylistic playfulness.

It has energy... emotion... and, of course, that girl-next-door charm that reminds us why, after 20 years, Amy is still reigning queen of the CCM music scene.

As with any artist of this magnitude, it goes without saying that the production values and arrangements on this album are top-notch. There's enough modern pop influence to keep the sound fresh, without losing sight of the fact that Amy is 42, not 21. Overall, there's not an unpleasant musical moment to be found on this album.

And yet...

As much as I wanted to like this record, the songs in this collection have, on first listen, left me a little flat. After the depth and melancholy of 1997's "Behind the Eyes" and the refreshing bluegrass/country flavor of "Legacy Hymns," I guess I was expecting something more profound... both lyricly and musically. I suppose the album's title should have been a warning to me: "Simple Things" is exactly what you get.

If you liked Amy's early-90s mega-hits like "Baby, Baby," "Every Heartbeat" and "That's what Love is For," this album is definitely for you. It's ripe with the latest pop sounds skillfully tailored to Grant's distinctive voice.

If you're a long-time fan like me, it's a must-have as well, simply because Amy sounds so good, and it's so nice to have her "back."

I just wish I liked it more.

It took me a little while, but learned to really enjoy Amy's last pop album "Behind the Eyes". Amy's new pop album "Simple Things" is written in that same vein - lots of guitar for a rock/pop sound. For me, however, the songs just aren't that good. I've now listened to it several times and it just doesn't do anything for me. One minor criticism is that it seems to be overproduced on a couple of songs - with special effects that you'd expect to hear on a Brittney album. I love Amy's voice and have liked her songwriting in the past, but found this cd to be a major dissapointment for me. I'll continue to listen and if I change my mind, I'll re-post and give it a higher rating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Milquetoast, October 10, 2003
This review is from: Simple Things (Audio CD)
First off, let me say that I've been a fan of Amy for many years, both before and after her "crossover" from Christian to mainstream pop. I've always found her voice to be strong, earnest and sweet. I saw the television promo ads for this newest album and I was terribly excited. They lauded it as a "comeback" (was she gone?) and stressed that the album was "three years in the making" (it took that long to write one long song?). Her last studio album, "Behind the Eyes," was a revelation to me, I thought she was really on the right road with her material. Unfortunately, while I don't view this release as a detour, it seems little more than a speed bump. It just doesn't go anywhere, it all sounds the same to me and it's way too A/C, MOR. In other words, bland and generic, at least to my ears. I haven't given up on Amy, though, I know she has a lot more to offer. Let's hope her next album is more, er, inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars Velvet Voice and Legendary Lyrics: Believe in Simple Things, September 10, 2003
This review is from: Simple Things (Audio CD)
As she did on her last album, "Behind the Eyes", Amy Grant has opened up her life and heart with her lyrics on "Simple Things". Amy Grant is honest -- sometimes almost painfully so -- and both of these albums present a snapshot of her life that is real, raw and emotional.

That comparison is where the similarity between these albums ends. "Simple Things" reflects not only a transition from tough times to happier times (the first track is appropriately titled "Happy"), it also reflects a leap in artistic expression. The lyrics fit the music, and most importantly, Amy's vocals are right on the mark.

She changes her inflection and tone to a light and happy mix as she sings of being a child in the single "Simple Things"; she takes a distinctly new approach on "Eye to Eye", mirroring the circling argument presented in the lyrics with looping music/backround vocals and a stair-step bridge; and, on "Innocence Lost", she strips down to her familiar velvet and soulful tone to reveal the power of simple honesty.

All but two of the songs were written by Grant, continuing her tradition of being a singer/songwriter/musician. As a result, this album is uniquely Amy. For her older fans, think of the energy of "Unguarded" mixed with the emotion of "Lead Me On" with just a hint of "Heart in Motion": that is "Simple Things".

For her newer fans, think of this album as the one you will replay many times when you first get it. There are plenty of good hooks and quotable lyrics, and you will certainly be hearing "Simple Things" and probably "Eye to Eye" and "Happy" on the radio for years to come.

This is classic Amy Grant: Honest, emotional, raw and spiritual. The Amy Grant who started singing Christian music 25 years ago has evolved into the complete musical package. It just doesn't get much better than this.

Get ready to smile, and believe in Simple Things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful, January 13, 2004

I have been an Amy Grant fan for a long time and I was really looking forward to her first album of new material after Behind the Eyes. A lot of things in her life had changed in that time and I wanted to see how that would be reflected in her music. I was not disappointed in the least with this album. It has the mixture of secular love songs and more meaningful and spritiual songs that I have always loved about Amy's records. Songs like "Happy," "Looking for You," and "Touch" are great love songs and songs like "I Don't Know Why," "Out in the Open," and "Innocence Lost" are very meaningful and inspirational especially for those that have dealt with difficult times and doubt. However, my favorite songs on the album are "Simple Things," "Beautiful," and "After the Fire" This is because these songs are very hopeful and positive and can be taken as spiritual or secular, depending on one's mindset. Musically the music is not very complex or original. Instead they are simple melodies that are easy to sing along with and hum. I believe that is why Amy chose to title it Simple Things. The songs are just simple pretty songs that allow someone to hear the message in the songs and take simple enjoyment in them at the same time. It's a great album to listen to in order to relax or just enjoy some good music. I am very pleased with this album and will continue to the buy the music of this extremely talented and thoughtful musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!!!!!!!!, August 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Simple Things (Audio CD)
I've been waiting 6 years for Amy Grant to release a new album of pop material. "Simple Things" was worth the wait! There is such a great variety of material here, yet it all feels like a cohesive album. I love the title track, as well as "Happy" and "Beautiful," which is a duet with her husband, Vince Gill. In addition to pop love songs, there are lots of songs about her faith..."Eye to Eye," "Innocence Lost," "Out In The Open," and "After the Fire." This is a great album with great production and Amy's voice sounds amazing!

3.0 out of 5 stars Uneven in musical quality, September 4, 2003
This review is from: Simple Things (Audio CD)
"Simple Things" is a very uneven record in terms of the quality of the music. There are some great songs, some of the best songs Amy has ever recorded (in my opinion), and other songs that are strikingly poorer in quality. A musical quality that seems prevalent is the overuse of "canned" electronic studio effects in many of the songs. Rather than provide an accompaniment to the lyrics they are a distraction, in some cases more severe than others. This can be noticed on the tracks "I Don't Know Why", "Happy", "Eye To Eye", and "Simple Things", with the electronic effects becoming more and more distracting with each song. This mediocre production is in stark contrast to the very well-produced hymns record "Legacy" Amy released last year, and "Behind The Eyes", her last pop record. While not chock-full of electronic effects, the musical background of "Touch" is not only distracting, but grating! What were the producers thinking? Despite the musical disappointments, the lyrics on the album are very solid, except for the rather unsubstantial "Happy" and "Looking For You". The best moments of the album are when the production becomes less thick and layered, and more of a showcase for the well-crafted songwriting in songs like "Out In The Open", "Innocence Lost", and "After The Fire". These three alone are worth the price of the record. Overall, a 7/10.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Things are best.., January 6, 2006
This review is from: Simple Things (Audio CD)
This album is very good - I love it. Many of the songs are now favourites of mine:
Happy - I love this song - It's catchy, fun and very sweet...
Simple Things - This song is really lovely - Just about the simple things in life, that are most important
Beautiful - This song is also sweet - A lot of this album is about what's important, and these songs, espeically this demostrate that!
Out in the open - It's a reflective song, while catchy, about being forgiven and the pureness of forgiveness.
Innocent lost - This song, I love! I think everyone can relate to the idea of wanting to go back to being a child again - Being innocent once more. Amy sounds lovely on this one, and you can tell that although she didn't write the song, she believes and agrees with it.

All in all, this is a great album for anyone - Nearly everyone will relate to two or more of the songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoy this CD, September 14, 2005
This review is from: Simple Things (Audio CD)
This is going to sound really wierd, but I had a dream that told me I needed to listen to this CD. Wasnt sure at the time why. So I went and read the reviews and found that most people didn't have much good to say about it. I hadnt listened to her music in awhile, but desided to get the CD anyways and see if this dream had something to it.

Its a good Amy Grant CD. I have a few of her other ones, and this one fits right in with them. I like every song but one. And thats only cause I don't really like duets with guys I've never heard of.

After listening to this CD I know the reason I was supost to listen to it was cause of a song called "Innocence Lost." You'd have to know me to understand. But I've had a lot bad stuff happen to me for a 21 year old. And I have been doing a lot of scearching within myself and the world. And right now this song fits right in. beginning the song with, "I cant relive my life....I cant retrance my tracks.....I can't undo whats done.....there is no going back."

So if you've liked her music before. I'm sure you'll like this CD too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not stellar, but definitely good, July 7, 2008

When this album came out in 2003 it was kind of a departure for Grant. It's been criticized as being a relatively weak effort.

And there's no denying that it's a very "small" album. By that I mean that it lacks any cosmic focus. Even Grant's lightest-weight albums have some serious songs about humankind -- creation, our place in it, big questions like: where is God when a child is abused.

Simple Things, on the other hand, is entirely a "you and me" album. Every song can be heard as a strictly one-on-one relationship song. One of them, "Beautiful" is actually about a family that's faced the tragedy of watching a child die of an unstoppable illness, but unless you know that background the listener hears a you-and-me song.

That said, it has too many really excellent moments to justify dismissing it. "Eye to Eye" faces a breakup and the need for common ground and reconciliation head on. "Out in the Open" depicts healing and renewal outstandingly. A similar theme, but a deeper depiction of the pain of failure comes in "Innocence Lost." And the superb "After the Fire" (another version of which appeared earlier only as a hidden track on a limited edition EP) is one fans have been waiting for. It's wonderfully written and recorded, with a simple guitar and Grant's voice close to the microphone, giving it an intimate feel.

Good moments, even if they aren't great ones, come in "Looking for You" and in "Happy" - an infectious expression of a simple idea, that of just wanting to make the one you love happy. "I Don't Know Why" has a kind of ordinary tune but wonderful lyrics. The dramatic "Beautiful" sounds --just my opinion-- out of place among these acoustic tunes, but on its own merits, it's a powerful song.

The album's only truly weak moments are the title song -- too lightweight and with a silly arrangement -- and the arrhythmic "Touch" which should be sexy but sounds jarring, with its varying time signatures that toss you out of the song each time you almost get "into" it. Some people love it anyway, and it deserves good marks for being honest and musically risky.

Bottom line, the album has a number of moments that will WoW! you, even though, when it's over, you'll feel like it was nice but not a Wowzer. And repeated listenings made it grow on me.

The worst fault of the original 2003 issue was the compression, and now with this remaster it has a fuller, richer sound. So get the remaster.
