Book Description

June 2006
It's rush hour. The radio reports bumper-to-bumper traffic, rising interest rates, falling confidence, and another political scandal, when a quieter, less hurried voice asks: "When was the last time you were asked to do something great?" The question begins a brief observation on simple truths—easily neglected but deeply significant—about life, meaning, values, and our common good.

Adapted from Stephen Bauman’s popular radio commentary, Simple Truths offers a daily dose of grace-filled reflection for twenty-four hour rush-hour readers.

From the Preface:
"As I began preparing these one-minute prompts, I became aware that simple truth is often hidden in plain view. . . . They are simple truths, even homely in their fashion, but remain buried or ignored, not least because of simple neglect in our clogged environment. This is so even for those who desire greater awareness and a more honest life."

"The mere fact that something is true reveals its ancient genetics. The small task I took on was to write and speak to things that were right in front of us today, fashioning little parables out of the cloth of our current culture that might tweak our minds to awareness of simple truth, making conscious what had been shrouded by slumber or intoxicants of one form or another."

"One minute is but a meaningless sound-bite—that’s one possible response, I suppose. On the other hand, one minute might also be a window on eternity, or at least and more likely, on the next hour."

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

For 10 years Bauman, senior minister at Christ Church in Manhattan, has been delivering daily one-minute inspirational messages on WCBS Radio; Simple Truths brings 166 of those pieces to print. Most explore questions of civility, faith and the values that we hold—or ought to hold—dear. Daily habits, business ethics, international events and even overheard conversations are all grist for Bauman. There are some "aha" moments in these short meditations, such as one that explores consumer brands as the new religion, or another visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Overall, however, these short pieces probably played better over the radio than on paper. The content fits what a listener can process during a busy rush hour commute, while book readers tend to seek something a bit meatier. Quite a few are so tightly wrapped up with an unambiguous moral that there is little for the reader to actually contemplate. Others relate to holidays, or to national or political events long past, leaving the reader to imagine the original context. (June)

I'm very glad he wrote this book. I looked forward to every one of his radio spots. The man is a keen and thoughtful observer of life. No Proselytizing at all!
