If you are getting ready to spruce up your home with window treatments, bed coverings, pillows, or any other decorative accessories, this IS the guide you've been searching for. Using an open bound edge, for laying the book flat, Martha Vaughan and Phoebe Gaughan provide step by step, easy to understand directions that can give even the novice better than expected results. Each section gives clear, easy-to-follow techniques, and numerous diagrams. There are also 16 pages of color photos to help to inspire your creative side. I whole-heartedly recommend this book and consider it a great value.

When I got this book, I immediately noticed the value of the information offered. It has tons of details from fabric choices to what kind of tools to purchase. In the back it even offers "time saving" features which gives you ideas to use fabric in different ways from walls to glueing seams together to save time on sewing. The book places a lot of emphasis on certain things that beginners NEED to know. I am a beginner and have poured over tons of other books and nothing compares to this book in terms of teaching you how to do different techniques. Certainly, the fabric choices in this book are outdated, but use your imagination! You don't have to purchase the same fabric or color choices in this book. Purchase your own and use the outlines offered in this book. Even add your own. A great book to start with. Highly recommended!

I think that this book is fantastic. It covers so many different home decorating projects, with very clear easy to follow instructions. It's a great addition to any home sewing reference library.

If you are interested in making your own home fabrics, this is a great resource. This book shows you step-by-step how to make no-sewing and simple sewing projects to personalize your home (and save money to boot!). This is not an interior decorating book; rather, it is a manual for people who want to spruce up their homes but need to know HOW. I didn't see any outdated information here - some of the styles were more "country" than others, but there is plenty here from other design styles to keep you busy. Also, you can tailor the majority of the ideas in this book to your tastes. All in all, a fantastic guide to sewing projects for the home.

I really like this book - granted, I wouldn't duplicate the exact styles in the book (it screams 1980s), but I know what styles I like, I just needed some guidance on how to make what I wanted to make. This book covers everything - window coverings, bed linens, etc. My only complaint is that sometimes the directions are SO simplified that it almost makes them confusing. But overall it was a great purchase. Also, I almost bought this book at a craft store close by, but ended up buying it on Amazon...with standard shipping it came two days later and was less expensive than the one at the craft store.

This book has been around for years. I have used it numerous times in referencing how to do something or figure out yardage when making drapery, pillows, anything for the house. I recently purchased the book for my daughter=in=law who does interior design. It is a great reference book to have.

This book is an essential reference to sewing EVERYTHING you could possibly want to sew for your home. Very simple, easy-to-read instructions will have even a beginner making curtains in no time!

I'm an experienced sewer and have many newer home sewing books, yet I find myself reaching for this 1993 gem again and again.

The fabric choices and some of the styles (ie. floral prints and ruffles) ARE badly outdated, as other reviewers have pointed out, but of course you are free to use fashionable fabrics in your creations.

If you can afford to buy only one book on sewing for your home, I recommend that it be this one.

This is the best decorating book. Very easy to understand. I made the valances and drapes for my new house from the directions in this book. I highly recommend this home decorating book.

Since hiring an interior design expert was totally outside the realm of possibility for my budget, I decided, with great trepidation, to tackle the monumentus job of redesigning my living room. Although I had read several "Home Dec" how to books, and had a little sewing experience, I was still overwhelmed and intimidated by the prospect of taking on even a slip cover. I was pleasantly suprised to discover Simplicity's Simply the Best Home Decorating Book. The book gave me some great "simple" ideas for my home that even I could accomplish successfully. I would recommend this book as a great reference manual for any novice to expert "interior designer".
