Useful for an amateur church pianist.,
This review is from: Simplified Accompaniments: 97 Hymns from the Hymnal 1982 (Spiral-bound)
The editors chose 97 hymns to present with simplified piano parts which anyone who has had a year and a half to two years of lessons should be able to play.
The criteria were that they had to cover popular hymns and tunes that were used with more than one text, as well as enough tunes in the most frequently used meters so that other texts could be cross-tuned. The settings had to be harmonically compatable with the settings in the Episcopal Church Hymnal. This book was intended for use by small congregations who don't have a professional music director. It can be useful for home use, to revive the tradition of family hymn-sings. It can be useful in Sunday School programs; an older child who has taken some piano would find it empowering and affirming to be called on to play for the other children's singing. If you are a churchgoing family and have a child who is taking piano lessons, I would suggest talking to your child's teacher about incorporating this book into his/her teaching. I presume that other denominations' hymnal have similar companion volumes; those that don't SHOULD.
