5.0 out of 5 stars The Title of This CD Says It All September 7, 2000
Format:Audio CD
Peter Kingsbery is a rare musical genius, and in fact may be our best songwriter. This CD, "Simply the Best," is a greatest hits compilation of tracks from several of Cock Robin's records from the late 1980's. "Cock Robin" was his band while recording for Columbia, and if music is mostly melody, then the composer who knows the most about music may well be Peter Kingsbery. "When Your Heart Is Weak" and "Because It Keeps on Working," for example, are from the band's great self-titled debut of 1985. "Just Around the Corner" is a hit from the excellent second record, "After Here Through Midland" (1987). "Stumble and Fall" and "Worlds Apart" are from the startlingly brilliant Mariachi influenced third record, "First Love Last Rites," which followed 2 years later, and gets my vote for one of the best-recorded albums in the last century. Kingsbery's voice has been the key--it's dazzling--and he honed composition skills to match this great gift. He also had the insight to work with another amazing singer--Anna LaCazio was the perfect match for the passion of this songwriter's important work. (It's hard to beat a duet sung by a man and a woman with great emotion; Kingsbery and LaCazio did this time and again.) Mr. Kingsbery lives in France and continues to record innovative works in a solo career, working in musical theatre and with different ensembles. "Simply the Best" is a concise look at where he started, and it's exciting to think where this maestro will take us in the next century.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing here that is memorable. May 8, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this CD because I read some glowing reviews of this act. I'm sorry to say I don't agree. After a few plays of this CD nothing I heard makes me want to ever play it again. These songs just float by without anything being memorable about the songs or the performances. After a few listens I can't remember one song on here. The songs sound "almost" complete, like it is missing something. I really wanted to like this stuff but it doesn't work for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disagree with daddyshark May 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I've gotta disagree with DaddyShark's one star review.
Cock Robin put out 3 CD's in the 80's and I thought they were all pretty good, if not great!

That said, I looked at the track listing here, and feel you're doing yourself a favor by just getting the 3 original CD's as they really are worth it.

I think it later came out that Peter had a huge crush on Anna, and in retrospect it's easy to listen to the songs and feel the emotions they would have felt at the time.

Specifically the lyrics on The promises you made, a little innocence, for experience sake, and 'thought you were on my side' seem to tell the tale of the relationship they had, (or almost had) back in the day. Very much a story of the one who got away. That person who was just almost within reach, yet it never quite worked out, yet you still had hope that they'd some day get another chance (oddly this kinda happened for them as they've released 2 more CD's in the past few years for a total of 5 studio albums as of early 2011 (The CD 'I don't want to save the world' has songs with lyrics that back this up)

I think it's completely wrong to label them as a one hit / trick wonder - I've gone back and listened to the CD's countless times over the past 20 years and they're still great. Compare that to most of the 80s stuff that I collected at the time and all of Cock Robin's works have really held up well.

At the end of the day, I think much of music is about emotion - You identify with a song for one of two reasons - the lyrics or the music. As most of Cock Robin is about relationships, I think most people will have no trouble connecting with the group through their music.

1.0 out of 5 stars Weak Robin February 21, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this disc because I totally love the song "When your heart is weak".The rest of the songs are weak at best. I've listened to them 3 times,in hope that I'd grow to like more of the disc but none of the other songs stick. Trite pap that is truely in the "one trick wonder pony" catagory.
