Book Description

Zebra Contemporary Romance December 1, 2008
Nothing takes the sheen off a marriage proposal quite like discovering that your prospective fiance already has a wife. And for newspaper writer Alexandra Kenner, this is just the latest in a series of unfortunate relationships that are good for only one thing - badmouthing over beers with her best buddy, Mack Douglas. For a guy - especially a distractingly sexy, determinedly single guy - Mack has his decent side, offering to let Alex stay with him while he helps her remodel her house, even setting her up with a potential Mr. Right. What more could Alex ask for - except perhaps an encore of that out-of-the-blue, completely earth-shattering kiss Mack just laid on her?Mack can't pinpoint the moment Alex stopped being the girl next door and became the marquee name in his wildest fantasies. She's always been gorgeous, but lately the commitment-phobic contractor wants her in ways and places that would change their friendship forever. That's something Alex will never risk, unless Mack can find a way to convince her that together they can build something that's bigger, better, and definitely made to last.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Mack and Alex have been best friends since first grade, so naturally, after Alex finds out that her fiancé is married, she turns to Mack for comfort. But things are starting to get tense between them as Mack wonders if Alex will ever see him as a man and not just a buddy. Their relationship finally changes with a blow-your-socks-off kiss, but the friends keep fighting their attraction in order to maintain their friendship. Jump’s newest contemporary romance is pleasingly complex and driven by personable characters who have the reader rooting for a happy outcome. --Patty Engelmann

More About the Author

Nationally bestselling author Shirley Jump didn't have the willpower to diet nor the talent to master under-eye concealer, so she bowed out of a career in television and opted instead for a career where she could be paid to eat at her desk'writing.

She started out in journalism, selling her first article at the age of eleven and dreaming of being the next Jane Pauley. After writing 3000 articles and two non-fiction books, Shirley grew too dependent on her robe and fuzzy slippers, though, and decided a career as a freelance writer suited her better.

Then she got married. And had two kids.

Humor became the only thing that got her through the mashed potato flingfests and toilet paper decorating sprees. At first, seeking revenge on her children for their grocery store tantrums, she sold embarrassing essays about her children to anthologies such as Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul and Chocolate for Women II. However, it wasn't enough to feed her growing addiction to writing funny.

So she turned to the world of romance novels, where messes are (usually) cleaned up before The End and no one is calling anyone a doodoo head. In the worlds Shirley gets to create and control, the children listen to their parents, the husbands always remember holidays and the housework is magically done by elves.

She sold her first book to Silhouette Romance in 2001. That novel, THE VIRGIN'S PROPOSAL, won the Booksellers' Best Award for Best Traditional Romance of 2003. Two of her subsequent books were finalists in the Golden Quill Awards and two others were finalists in the Madcap Awards for best romantic comedy. She is also a Reviewers' Choice Award winner.

Shirley has sold twenty-six novels and now writes stories for Harlequin/Silhouette and Kensington Books about love, family and food'the three most important things in her life (though, there are many days when the order is reversed), using that English degree everyone said would be so useless.

She found a way to combine all her favorite things in her recipes with her own romantic comedy series from Zebra Books, which launched in September 2004 with THE BRIDE WORE CHOCOLATE. The fourth, THE BACHELOR PREFERRED PASTRY, is a February 2006 release, followed by PRETTY BAD in February 2007. Her next Romances will be a linked duet of BACK TO MR. & MRS. and MARRIED BY MORNING in May and June 2007. She also writes for Harlequin NeXt.

Though she's thrilled to see her books in stores around the world, Shirley mostly writes because it gives her an excuse to avoid cleaning the toilets and helps feed her shoe habit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous!, June 9, 2010

This review is from: Simply The Best (Zebra Contemporary Romance) (Paperback)
Since the back cover blurb is already given on this page, I'll get straight to my review.

I first read Shirley Jump in the Sugar and Spice Christmas anthology. I liked her contribution, so when I say SIMPLY THE BEST at the used book store, I decided to give it a try.

I'm really glad I did. I enjoyed this novel thoroughly. There are actually three couples in this novel. I'll deal with the primary one first.

The theme of best friends falling in love is a favorite of mine, and the author handled it well. The hero and heroine had great chemistry without being overdone. While their sexual tension sizzled, I also felt like there was more to their relationship than just the physical. The author did a good job of developing the characters, so that I really felt like I knew them, and could see why they would fall in love with on another. The author also tackled some real relationship issues in this book; this was more than the stupid misunderstandings you read so often in romance. I was expecting a bit of a fluff read, given the cover art (that'll teach me to ignore the advice of not judging a book by its cover!) but this one got to me more than I expected. I got tears in my eyes more than once while reading this.

In the secondary relationships, the heroine's friend is dealing with the near breakdown of her marriage, and the hero's parents are currently seperated, though still in love with one another. I felt the author did a good job of bringing satisfying conclusions to all these story threads without being over-the-top cheesy. There were also some laugh-out-loud moments while reading this. Not many authors do humor well, but this book hit the mark.

If an author can bring me to both laughter and tears in the same novel, it's a winner. I'm a very picky reader, but it's safe to say that I will definitely be reading this author again!

4.0 out of 5 stars fine contemporary romance, December 6, 2008
This review is from: Simply The Best (Zebra Contemporary Romance) (Paperback)
For over two decades, Mack Douglas and Alexandra Kenner have been friends and neighbors. They are always there for one another, but neither shows any sexual inclination towards their pal. In fact Mack muses whether Alex even realizes he is not just one of the "girls" and likewise Alex ponders whether Mack knows she is one of the girls. When the reporter's house is under renovation, Mack invites her to stay in his; which she accepts at the same time she ends another losing relationship.

A confirmed bachelor, Mack finds himself fantasizing about sex with Alex. His upper head is embarrassed by his sexual musing, but the libido of his lower head is rock solid. Meanwhile Alex begins to realize she wants more than friendship with the contractor next door, but how to seduce the commitment wary Mack becomes her obsession even more than her career, which until she moved in was her number one goal.

SIMPLY THE BEST is a fine contemporary romance starring two best buddies falling in love with neither knowing how to proceed. The tale is fun to follow due to the wary antics of Mack and Alex as each covets the other, but hides as best they can their desire to change their relationship. This is simply a lighthearted When Harry Met Sally frolic.

Alex and Mack have been friends forever and now they release that there friendship has a layer of lust. Alex's life is in chaos - her fiancé is married, she is homeless, she has inherited a real fixer upper house that brings back lots of memories. This story has 3 love stories that add a nice dimension to the story.
