Offers a full-color presentation, including syntax coloring, code highlighting, callouts and extensive comments. Features ten additional multiple-choice questions at the end of every tutorial, plus "What does this code do?" and "What's wrong with this code?" exercises, and four programming exercises focused on real-world applications, including a "Programming Challenge." Provides icon-based tips, including Good Programming Practices, Software Design Tips, Common Programming Errors, GUI Design Tips and Error-Prevention Tips. Includes a comprehensive Glossary and full Index at the end of the book.  A valuable reference for programmers or anyone who would like to learn the C++ programming language.

1.0 out of 5 stars Typos, and poorly written, NOT good., August 17, 2005
This review is from: Simply C++: An Application-Driven Tutorial Approach (Paperback)
First off, this book should be compared with other application driven approaches. From that stand point, this book is poorly organized, filled with typos, and really doesn't add clarity to the subject, (ie C++). Typos in an application driven approach really cause problems because you are depending on the code that they have written to be instructive in and of itself. In other words, you read the code, and their explaination of the code, and your knowledge comes from clear usable examples. It just seems that they are not that organized, or they may have had to cut some of the information out of the book in order to send it to print in time. I don't know. Of the 22 chapters, I have completed all the work through chapter 17, and now it is so muddy, since the topics are a little more difficult, I have decided to find some better sources to learn from. The first 10 chapters are not so bad, since they are language basics, loops, variables, if else,... But, they started to get confused at pointers and classes. These are extremely important topics in C++, and I have found other books that are far more helpful. Some of the decisions that they made as to how they taught the material was and is perplexing.

If you are looking for a reference book, don't even think about this book. So, it is neither good for applications, or reference.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simply C++, September 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Simply C++: An Application-Driven Tutorial Approach (Paperback)
I have used other Deitel books to instruct myself on programming in the past and this particular book is good for someone just starting out in C++ programming or new to programming all together. The book goes over the execution of each programming exercises final product and then follows up on creating the application from scratch. The exercises are mildly entertaining. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to program from the middle school level on up through college education.

Overall, this textbook is great for beginners. It has so many examples for you to follow. You can literally buy this book and learn C++ on your own if you have some basic programming knowledge already.
