5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent deal
I bake something almost every day, and have long been a subscriber to the basic belief that inexpensive pans from the grocery store do a perfectly acceptable job--as long as I don't mind replacing them every year or so.

OK, crap may be a bit too harsh but they have tried to pass this stuff off as good buy skinping on the nonstick coating and using overly heavy metal. I have had this set now for several months and the baking sheet has not been as nonstick as you'd think. I have had to scrub it a bit with as nonabrasive a pad as I could. I bake something almost every day, and have long been a subscriber to the basic belief that inexpensive pans from the grocery store do a perfectly acceptable job--as long as I don't mind replacing them every year or so.

While I've only had this set about two weeks so far, I think those days of replacing pans constantly are gone. Cupcakes pop easily out of a very nonstick tin, and have a thin, crisp crust around the edge that was terrific on both yellow cupcakes and bran muffins. With two batches, not a single item stuck--it's the best of any muffin pan I've used in 20 years of baking. The large baking sheet is officially a jelly roll pan, but works fine as a cookie sheet if you don't have the newer edge-free airbake type, and it's great for loose items like oven fries or hors d'oevres. My shortbread turned out perfectly on the large sheet, as did the gingerbread I baked in the 9" square.

The pans are quite heavy, which might make them difficult for people with severe carpal tunnel or arthritis to use on a regular basis. The thick dark metal means that everything bakes a little quicker than you might be used to, so keep your eye on the first batch or two and learn what to expect. They're all easy to clean--since nothing sticks, I can basically just wipe everything off with a soft towel. Each piece has a 10-year warranty, which is unheard of with cookware at such a low price. The components of the set include everything a beginner baker could want, except a pie plate--it's a great gift for someone who's just learning to cook or needs to stock a new kitchen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Simply Calphalon - simply crap, April 12, 2004

OK, crap may be a bit too harsh but they have tried to pass this stuff off as good buy skinping on the nonstick coating and using overly heavy metal. I have had this set now for several months and the baking sheet has not been as nonstick as you'd think. I have had to scrub it a bit with as nonabrasive a pad as I could. The nonstick coating has worn off in spots -- the same spots I always put cookies or biscuits. Assuming that I got a defective unit I have another complaint. These baking pieces have rolled edges that hold water and RUST. This is no defect but merely a poor design.

Bottom line:

1. Great price
2. Too heavy
3. Poor nonstick coating
4. Edges hold water and rust.
5. I'd have expected these to equal the quality of my other Calphalon cokware: Pots, pans, skillets, pot holders, towels, apron and spoons.
6. I would have agreed to other reviews 100% but they are from an initial point of view from which this set looks good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good quality for this price!, January 5, 2003
This review is from: Simply Calphalon 5-Piece Baking Set (Kitchen)
This set is an excellent value. The description says, "heavy gauge carbon steel construction" but I was surprised to see just how heavy & sturdy & well constructed they are for only [money]. I'm seriously considering buying another Calphalon set and getting rid of all those thin, light weight, warped cookie sheets & baking pans in my cupboards. At this price I can afford to replace them all!

3.0 out of 5 stars Heavy and No-stick coating wears out, April 16, 2004
By
This review is from: Simply Calphalon 5-Piece Baking Set (Kitchen)
Sorry, I bought this set and for a guy my size they are HEAVY. The non-stick coating is starting to give out and I'm back to using baking parchment or teflon sheets on top of the cookie sheets.

I think they have a short life span of heavy duty usage. I wouldn't buy them again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good except rusts in dishwasher, February 20, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Simply Calphalon 5-Piece Baking Set (Kitchen)
Supposedly these pans are dishwasher-safe, but everytime I take them out of the dishwasher, they drip orange-brown water all over the place. What happens is that water gets into the crevice/seam on the underside of the pan where the edges have been turned over. It's not a tight seal, and since there's no coating on inside, when the water gets in there, it rusts. And then when I take the pans out of the dishwasher, the rusty water drips out. The good news is that, since the rusting is on the bottom, it normally doesn't get onto the food surface. However, I have found some hardened rusty water spots on the food surface before. Not to mention all the rusty water in my dishwasher and the drips on my floor. This is very annoying. I've heard very good things about Calphalon. I would have expected better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, May 30, 2003

For the price, this set is an excellent value and very good quality. I would warn anyone who buys these though, to make sure to dry the pans immediately after you wash them. Water collects in the rolled edges and quite a bit of rusty water can come pouring out when you get it out of the dishwasher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Set., December 8, 2003

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Simply Calphalon 5-Piece Baking Set (Kitchen)
This is a great looking set. The baking pans included are very useful. Each is nice and heavy. The entire set is really sturdy and long-lasting. Even after a day's baking, just wipe them off with a paper towel, and they are ready to go and look good. The color is a great match to your kitchen appliances, especially black ones. Great set. Awesome Price.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the "heavy duty" baker, May 1, 2003
This review is from: Simply Calphalon 5-Piece Baking Set (Kitchen)
This set puts my old baking set to shame. It feels like it will last to become a family heirloom! I am very pleased with the quality and construction of the pieces. Although they are non-stick, the instructions do tell the user, if the recipe calls for it, to use a small amount of non-stick cooking spray and then wipe out the extra. I did a test and sprayed the loaf pan but not the muffin tins while doing banana bread/muffins. The loaf popped right out but the muffins stuck enough that I needed to use a rubber spatula to keep from leaving the bottoms in the pan. (Following manufacturer's directions, it would not have been a problem.) My recipe also called for spraying AND flouring the pan which was unnecessary with the Calphalon pieces. Since the pieces are very heavy and slick when wet, I don't think they are appropriate for a baker with weak wrists or unsure hands.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not go for Calphalon bakeware, November 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Simply Calphalon 5-Piece Baking Set (Kitchen)
I love my non-stick Calphalon cookware, so I thought it would be a good bet to get the bakeware. After all, such a nice look!
WRONG MOVE! Cookie sheet is a sure burn on the bottom, the surface is less than non-stick.
I have found that the "airbake" items do a much better job and are less $$.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Quality For Price, October 8, 2002

This review is from: Simply Calphalon 5-Piece Baking Set (Kitchen)
This is a good quality set of bakeware for its price. I highly reccommend this product based on how easy it is to clean the product and the fact that you get 5 bakeware pieces for 29 dollars.
