Book Description

Some teaching methods are timeless. In this revised and expanded edition of Charlotte Mason s grammar, you will discover one of them the simple method of narration that focuses on conversation as a natural means of teaching grammar to your fourth to eight graders. A large and curious Victorian illustration accompanies each lesson. Simply Grammar brings to bear more of your child's natural thinking ability than ordinary grammar lessons. The student is given the opportunity to create his own sentences, often to tell a story using the large illustrations. By this method he uses his new understanding of the sentence to demonstrate a more thorough knowledge. Simply Grammar allows you to follow a pace that matches your child's ability. Keeping this in mind, in most cases, a several year program where the teacher is free to decide when and how often review is necessary. Simply grammar can be used to enhance any other grammar program.

About the Author

Karen Andreola is the author of the perennial bestseller A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning. She coined the phrase "The Gentle Art of Learning" â„¢ to more fully express what the Charlotte Mason method of education has meant to her during the years she homeschooled her children from kindergarten through grade 12. She was responsible for the modern day revival of the Charlotte Mason method of education dating back to 1988 when she republished Charlotte Mason's 6 vol. Original Homeschooling Series. Karen was editor of the Parents' Review Magazine for Home Training and Culture for 6 years, conducted and promoted home support groups, and was a nationally sought after keynote speaker for the Charlotte Mason method, and topics such as parenting, and Mother Culture â„¢. She is also one of America's most respected homeschool product reviewers. Her other books include: Pocketful of Pinecones, Lessons at Blackberry Inn, Simply Grammar, Story Starters, and a revision of the classic Beautiful Girlhood. Ladies will enjoy reading her inspiring blog: Moments with Mother Culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful and unique approach to Language Arts., February 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Simply Grammar: An Illustrated Primer (Paperback)
I was initially sceptical about how useful this book would be to teach Language Arts. I checked it out from the library first and tried it out with my 8 and 9 y.o. daughters. We liked it so well we twice kept it beyond the due date. I purchased my own copy and didn't want to return the library's until mine came in the mail! My 8 y.o. is somewhat gifted in L.A., my 9 y.o. slightly below average. They both benefit from Simply Grammar and they both love it. The lay-out is simple and straightforward. We do the lessons together orally, although I believe an older child could work through the book more independently. We spend about twenty minutes a day, and the children always sigh wistfully when we are done. Simply Grammar has been especially affective with my 9 y.o. I have seen her apply what she has learned from S.G. to her other studies. Her reading comprehension has improved greatly. There is some repetition of difficult concepts, so we have been able to just move on when a particular topic is too difficult, confidant that we will come to it again. I think this approach would be especially refreshing for the child who is feelig a bit burned out with Language Arts, and for the family weary with workbooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super!, February 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Simply Grammar: An Illustrated Primer (Paperback)
Well, I never thought I would be saying my nine-year-old son likes grammar... but here I am. He is about as fidgety as the next boy, but he loves working through this book. We do a lesson a week, which translate to about 10-15 minutes a day. We do them orally, and he just loves it. The information sticks with him from week to week, and the lessons are fun and inviting. This is a treasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great homeschool resource..., September 15, 2005
This review is from: Simply Grammar: An Illustrated Primer (Paperback)
Great homeschool resource for families following Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy...as well as others who'd like additional resources for grammar. My 11-year-old enjoys grammar, now--he's not a big fan of diagramming...Although the book is marketed for Grades 4-HS, I'd use it as a textbook with the lower grades (it's probably written more to a 4th grade level) and as a resource for the upper grades.
