Book Description

April 17, 2012

If your grilling repertoire is limited to burgers and hot dogs, it might be time to reconsider your grill’s true potential. Think beyond that typical backyard menu, and imagine serving up a platter of skewered Caribbean Grilled Shrimp with Pineapple Salsa or a Balsamic Beef Tenderloin alongside an Asparagus and Cherry Tomato Salad. Memphis chef Jennifer Chandler has assembled everything a grilling amateur could possibly need to achieve pitmaster caliber results any night of the week. Whether you’re cooking with gas, charcoal, or cast iron, Simply Grilling will eliminate the uncertainty and have you manning the flames with confidence.

In her accessible style, Chandler explains everything—the tools, the heat, and the flavors. If you’ve always found grilling to be a guessing game, you’ll never have to wonder again if the heat is just right or if you flipped your food too soon. From appetizers to desserts and everything in between, Simply Grilling is your guide to delicious meals, hot off the grate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has everything a good cookbook should have! April 4, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Jennifer Chandler is an experienced and acclaimed chef with books, television appearances, and other writings. She is also a mom, so I can trust that many of her recipes are not going to have off the wall exotic ingredients, painstaking prep, or fanciful presentation. I was hoping for simple, family oriented recipes, with a few specialties to be brought out for company days. Because, lets face it, many moms and dads don't want to be spending all afternoon in the kitchen only to get whines and complaints from their little human counterparts across the table.

I had the opportunity to receive and give honest review of Chandler's latest book, Simply Grilling, a follow up in the "Simply" family of books she has started with precursors being Simply Salads, and Simply Suppers. I have not seen either of these two previous books, but after experiencing Simply Grilling, you can bet I'm headed to my local library to look it up!

In the day of easy to search recipes, exhaustive lists, and twists on every classic meal available online, an actual paper copy cookbook would have to have a few basic elements for me to even want to look at it.
1) Pictures- photographs that highlight what the food is supposed to resemble if you've followed the directions
2) Easy Searching and well organized
3) Tips or ideas for slight changes if you don't have the ability to quite do the recipe as listed

Simply Grilling offers all of these. My absolute favorite aspect of this cookbook (and honestly its the best I've seen in any cookbook I've encountered) are the large and detailed photographs. The basic layout is a photograph on one whole page, withe the recipe on its corresponding right side. SO AWESOME! I can tell almost with a glance at the title and the picture if it is a recipe worth looking into for my family. I also love the various tips she put at the bottom of each recipe. Icons represent whether they could be done inside on a grill pan, what could be done ahead of time, cooking tips, variations, a marinate icon to let you know at a glance if you shouldn't be starting a recipe at 4:45 and wanting to eat at 5 :) The first few pages of helpful grilling hints, understanding grilling gear, and how to deal with marinades and rubs were also a great element to this book. The recipes were well organized and had a great index in the back.

The only slight complaints I have about the book is that there are not enough meat recipes, and many of the ones that were there were more sauces and salsas disguised as meat grilling recipes. While the chapter was in the top right hand corner of each page, I would have loved a color block that was larger or along the side so it was a little quicker and easier to find the section I was looking for.

While I still think the I will use my online recipe resources, this is a great cookbook to have on hand and would make a GREAT gift to someone you know who loves to grill.

*I was given a copy of the cookbook in exchange for an honest review by book sneeze and Thomas Nelson publishers

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite CookBook! May 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Oh my Gosh do not even get me started on how I feel about this cookbook! This has quickly became one of the most used cookbooks in our home for the simple reason is it's typically geared towards mainly "grilling" menu's and such. We are a family that loves to grill but we were kinda limited to things like steak, hamburgers, hot dogs...you get the picture?

Simply Grilling showed us how simple it was to do vegetables and seafood on the grill and it just opened up our eyes to so many more possiblilities than what we had been doing. We increased our grill usuage threefold and you can do alot of these recipes on your indoor grill as well with minor changes and that is great when it's too hot out or rainy to be doing outdoor grilling.

One other major thing I enjoy about Simply Grilling other than the wide assortment of food is each recipe has it's own page with photo along with cooking tips, suggested sides, and other neat info and not just a wad of pictureless recipes on a page.

I always knew you "could" do lots more with your grill but was always afraid to try it because it seemed to much trouble or time consuming and having this cookbook on my shelf gave me the encouragement I needed to try these new things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Grilling is Simply Wonderful! May 16, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I love anything grilled - it just tastes better! So when I saw this book offered through Book Sneeze I had to grab it up. In Simply Grilling, Jennifer Chandler gives 105 recipes for quick and casual grilling complete with beautiful pictures of every recipe. She begins the book with a little Grilling 101, which I did read and found interesting. I can always learn something new. I didn't know about cast iron grill pans which help get that grilled taste when cooking indoors - it might be on my Christmas list next year. After seeing the movie Julie and Julia about a girl named Julie who spends a year going through Julia Child's The Art of French Cooking book making each recipe I feel like I might want to do that project with this cookbook! Each time I've read through this cookbook I get hungry and wish I lived closer to a grocery store so that I could get to work. Let me just tell you some of the recipes: Buffalo Sliders with Blue Cheese Slaw (you had me at blue cheese!), Grilled Pizza Margarita, Grilled Nachos, Grilled Radicchio with Balsamic Vinegar and Feta, and for dessert how about a Chocolate-Hazlenut and Banana Panini! Adventurous and so yummy! The only thing about this cookbook is that I might need to stop by the liquor store for ingredients since I don't usually keep any on hand - she uses whiskey, bourbon, beer, rum, wine, and tequila in her recipes- oh my, so if you see me stopped there you'll know why! Overall I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who loves grilling or who wants to start grilling. Beautiful pictures and great recipes make this a 5 star for me!
