Simply fun, Simply original,

While the average at home cook may have some difficulty with all the ingredients involved, the preparation and cooking is remarkably "Do-able".
Side note for Previous neg reviewer: What cook does not have little irritating habits? (For Julia, it was her VOICE for goodness sake. Don't even get me started with The Frug.) One of Mings happens to be this little "super chop" thing he does with his ceramic knife. So what? He worked for years in his Families restauraunt and probably picked it up there. Postering? I don't think so. Also, he puts himself down a little to much for my taste and sometimes talks like a hyper surfer-boy turned chef but besides that, hey! Enjoy! There are a remarkable amount of gems in this collection. One that always stands out is a "field trip" to a cafe where they do a demo of Sweet and Sour pork. That 5 minutes left me hungry and it was so quick and easy! Every episode has an educational trip of some sort. Not suprising, this being a WGBH (PBS) Production. They are usually always informative and applicable. You will find that this show is all about flavor and presentation. Heavily influenced (probably) from his time spent in his families restauraunt a lot of the dishes are served "Family style" on beautiful large plates and lots of emphasis on side dish "appitizers" if you will. Home-made Curry rubs, Tomato-lime salsas, teriyaki-cranberry glaze, Tea-rubs, etc. I am now hungry. (Sigh.) Every epidsode also features special guest ranging from Jacques Pepin, Aaron Sanchez, his chef Parents (Watch for an absolutetly delightful episode on Hot Water Dough w/ his mom. Hilarious!),Jasper White, Gale Gand, Lidia Bastianich(!), Etc. They all give their own take on Mings Master recipies. This is highly recomended for the budding cook with an open mind to new techniques and new flavors. This is in no way traditional but USES tried and true traditional techniques. The bonus features also included printable recipies and cooking tips and tricks. Well worth it and really and excellent addition to anyones cooking collection! I'm still waiting for the next set.... This DVDs set taught me a lot even though I cook a lot of Asian food and I am an Asian myself. Most recipe is simple, very delicious and can apply to all kind of meats and vegetables. I brought two set of this DVDs, gave one to my mother and she loved it.
I make the stir-fry sauce on Disc 3 and gave it out to some of my friends as a gift. They all loved it and ask for the recipe! Well worth the money. Really fun recipes to cook and eat.

Recipe and Wine advice for a home chef,

This review is from: Simply Ming - The Complete Collection (Discs 1-3) (DVD)
Ming's show has a great concept - create a master sauce/dish and expand upon it to make several different delicious dishes.
The wine pairing advice for each dish adds value, especially for the home chef looking for some great dinner party inpsiration. Ming sure likes his Sauvignon Blanc, so if you enjoy SB, you will love Ming's dishes! Kathleen Lisson

I like the DVD's, because the recipes are really refreshing. Ming's kitchen is fantastic. I like his mini-tours that illustrate the background info for the recipe or process. I like the spanish guest chef he invited, too. Very easy going, those 2 are nice working together on dishes.

Ming Tsai makes cooking at home less daunting. He is so focused on preparation and safety while creating succulent meals in minutes. Ming's East meets West combinations inspired me to stretch my imagination and create new East meets West recipes for my family. What got me to order the series in the first place? I kept wanting my son to check out Tsai's show on Create TV and watch it with me, but we kept missing him. Or we would tune in and Tsai's show would be concluding...I was pissed because I knew my son would enjoy Tsai and his relaxed approach to cuisine as much as me. Guess what? I was right..."Ol' Wise One Who Watches His Back Knows"

Simply Bad: great idea for a show but hard to watch,
By
This review is from: Simply Ming - The Complete Collection (Discs 1-3) (DVD)
Ming has a good idea: Take one basic "master recipe" and apply it to three or more different dishes. Fantastic! Applying general concepts like this is the basis of learning to be a real cook. I'm sure that the concept would be a great boon to many home chefs.
Unfortunately Ming himself is far too irritating to watch for long. His tendancy to be a smug, overbearing, know-it-all and impatient to boot render his show unwatchable by anyone but a Business School frat boy. If this guy has a book you should buy it and skip the heinous alpha-male kitchen posturing (with a ceramic chef knife). |
