5.0 out of 5 stars Makes me want to do the Side to Side, December 7, 2001

Aw, snap! Lo-fo, tinny, corny Casio beat-box sound, and one hell of a lot of fun. The first time I put this disc on I knew I was in for an audio treat, and now I can't stop spinning the damn thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dig the Sound of Today, August 31, 2002

BS 2000 is an off-shoot of the Beastie Boys, featuring the lo-fi noodlings of Ad-Rock and Amery Smith. Their sound consists mostly of Casio keyboards - with or without lyrics. The 20 songs last a total of roughly 45 minutes, so if you don't like one song, it'll be over soon! Some of the songs sound like early Beastie hard core, especially SICK FOR A REASON, and will likely appeal to people who like their CD AGLIO E OLIO. SCRAPPY sounds quite a bit like the Beasties' more recent work. But I'd say that BS 2000's music is more danceable than much of what the Beasties do. Overall, this CD is fun and different - all that you can expect from a side project. If you don't like it, then you can ask yourself, "Who died and left you Mr. Critic?" Sadly, this is one of the last CD's issued by the now-defunct Beastie label - Grand Royal. Try to get this one while it's still in print!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars No BS, This is Some Lo-Fi Sh!t!, May 21, 2001
This review is from: Simply Mortified (Audio CD)
BS 2000 is Adam Horovitz doing what he does best, entertaining. AD Rock hooked up the old school Casio's for this set and the grooves are down right infectious. The song lengths range anywhere from 1:30 to 3:00 and just bump. The music is fun and a nice change of pace from the most talented and original BBoy of them all. Simply Mortified is completely uncommercial and has received no publicity, yet I have a feeling that this "side project" might be the next big thing.

As the side project for Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys, this album is refreshingly different. It is definitely a put-me-on-in-the-background-of-an-upbeat-party cd and I love it. The best song is easily side to side it makes me want to hang out in a dive bar and dance. Side to side!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for music collectors who also like the beastie boys, November 25, 2007

This is truly an underrated and forgotten album. I was really excited when this came out. For those who don't know, this is Adrock's side project around the time the Beastie Boy's anthology came out. It apparently only appealed to true fans of the Beastie Boys and/or those who read about it in underground magazines. Adrock has some interesting influences with this album. There aren't your usually hip hop beats here. The songs are mostly boppy organ beats with some funny keyboard loops and gameboy bleeps. It definitely reflects Adrock's strange and crazy ideas that are hidden in the bboys other albums. It has a quirky mixture of 60's surf and lounge music, with some post punk influence, which are music genres that would fly over the heads of most bboy fans. Perhaps that has to do with the reason why it's not a well known work. Whatever the reason, it's still a good album. Some songs aren't so great, while the others are wonderfully strange gems. Before buying this album, know that it's very weird and very different from what you've ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars I NO CRITIC, BUT I DIG THE SOUND OF TODAY, February 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Simply Mortified (Audio CD)
I've already heard some bad comments regarding this second effort by BS2000, folks sayin it's only going to sell cuzza the name, meaning Adrock and the Beastie Boys. I disagree. THIS IS BS2000. This is definitely their sound; they own it and they're rockin the Casio non-stop. The beats are danceable, or at least they elicit some funky body action, which was my main reason for buying the album. The lyrics are short and slightly goofy, somewhat sarcastic, but all in a way that makes me smile and say "Yeah. Awright." Many of them, whether this was intended or not, have a strong tie to larger, more relevant issues, i.e. "It feels like" and "boogie bored." My suggestion, take it for what it's worth, is if you were into BS2000 when they put out the 12" back in '97, you'll like this. If you are buying this simply because you're into the B-Boys, don't. Maybe if you like DFL's fuzzy vocals, or the sound of "Heart Attack Man" and "Tough Guy" without the guitars (all of which Adam Horovitz had something to do with) you might, but that's a BIG might because you've gotta put a bunch of loopy beats in there. But then again, no one died and made me critic so I'll stop what I write, throw my chain wallet away and do the new dance in town.
