Finally Released in The U.S. - SIMPLY A MASTERPIECE !,
By GALLI (San Juan, PR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Simply Red: A Starry Night with Simply Red (DVD)
Now I have reviewed and attended numerous live concerts, and this one, I consider it just a masterpiece. First of all, eventhough this concert took place in 1992 in Hamburg, Germany, this new special edition DVD was released in 2005, utilizing High-Definition wide-screen transfer, as well as remastered Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound, with multiple camera editing. Fine. But what about the performance? A masterpiece. The original band members were at their peak, as well as band leader Mick Hucknall. The stage presence and musicianship is just superb. This show performance is much better than the "Live in London" DVD, and just as lively and outstanding as the "Live in Sicily" DVD. I enjoy live performances and this DVD does it all. It will make your Home Theater system outshine and clearly demostrate that Simply Red crosses all boundaries and feelings with enduring musicianship. As you can tell, it is highly recommended!

Here's the actual back cover text and track listing:
In January 1992 Simply Red set off on tour. They had just released their 4th album "Stars." In the 14 months that followed, they played 131 shows to 1.5 million people and sold 9 million albums around the world. This extraordinary film captures Simply Red in concert in Hamburg at the peak of their success on this sell-out tour. It features songs ranging from the band's early hits "Holding Back the Years" and "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" to "Thrill Me," "For Your Babies," and "Something Got Me Started" from the "Stars" album. With 9 new songs not included on the original video version, and newly remastered to high-definition and 5.1 surround sound for DVD release, it also includes exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the band's singer, songwriter, and driving force, Mick Hucknall, further interviews with band members and with other key collaborators shed light on the enduring popularity of one of the world's most successful groups. I made the best decision when I bought this DVD. "Stars" is definitively the best Simply Red album, so the concert based on it's songs and other of their hits is surely a must have. Mick Hucknall's performance is superb, natural, clean, energizing, enervating and the audience gave him an enthusiastic feedback. I highly recommend it.

LOVE MICK & SIMPLY RED,
This review is from: Simply Red: A Starry Night with Simply Red (DVD)
I rediscovered Simply Red with their last CD "Stay". I love this DVD as
well as their other work. Mick has the most wonderful voice & the other members of Simply Red are also talented. I think they're still in their prime. Their sound is different, it's hard to define.I'm also a Robbie Williams fan but now I find myself listening more & more to Simply Red. Mick's voice is wonderful, sexy & addictive. I know Mick is working on his next album & that Simply Red is splitting up after their 2009 tour. I am looking forward to Mick's next work & I'll be right there as one of his biggest fans.

Excellent DVD! The video quality is amazing, and the sound is as good as the 2007 DVD (Live at Royal Albert Hall). Simply one of the best music DVDs ever.

What A Performance!,

This review is from: Simply Red: A Starry Night with Simply Red (DVD)
Let me start off by stating that I had not been that big a fan of Simply Red and that I normally do not do reviews. I bought the "New Flame" LP when it came out years ago because of "I Keep Holding On." I did not pay much attention to them after that because at the time I thought they were a bit too much on the pop side (Mick's silly haircut at the time verified that) and I was mostly a rock music lover. I am now getting back into music after having kids and other interests and started looking into some of their other past albums. I got the "Stars" CD and then watched a youtube video of one of the songs from this concert. It was enjoyable to watch and the ratings were excellent so I purchased this DVD. OMG, what a performance! The band sounds excellent (but a bit nerdy looking) but clearly Mick captivates the audience. Along with that wonderful voice, his style of performance is all class. Maybe Simply Red was at the height of their popularity at the time, but Mick seems to be thoroughly enjoying himself and his band. An excellent slow start is followed by increasingly upbeat songs with Mick putting in just the right amount of rhythmic movements in sync with the music. There is absolutely no appearance of vanity or arrogance in his showmanship (notice at the end where he stands behind his band and claps). He goes through some minor wardrobe changes and lets his long red hair fly with his dancing that serves to accentuate the flow of the concert. I could go on and on about how much I love this DVD. I have yet to tire watching it after numerous viewings and ended up buying all the CDs with songs from this show. I have become an belated and ardent fan of Mick and the group - at least during this time period. I have yet to get into his current music, but if you want to enjoy an excellent performance while Mick and Simply Red were in their prime, I've seen no better from anybody (although the older Peter Gabriel concerts are darn good too!).
