Is it worth it?,
By mr insensitive (West Dakota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Simpsons - Christmas (DVD)
For $13.50 you get 5 episodes - one of which (the first Xmas special) is already on the Season One DVD and another (Mr Plow) which will be on Season Four (whenever they release it). Marge Be Not Proud (Bart gets busted for shoplifting at x-mas) was left off for whatever reason. The only special feature is a Mr Burns featurette. It's much like the Kodos and Kang featurette on the Treehouse of Horrors dvd - nothing special by any means. I also found the response time on the menu screen annoyingly slow as it is on the THoH dvd. But it is only $13.50. If you just like to enjoy Simpsons episodes on dvd in all their uncut splendor and clarity then it's a good cheap temporary fix while we wait for Season 4.

I have the disk bought it September 30th. The reviews I read so far are from those who have not viewed the dvd and those folks don't even have the dvd features correctly. People please wait til you have an item in hand before reviewing it.Here's the line-up: I viewed half of it so far. You get 5 episodes and 1 special featurette. You get Christmas (or snow) related episodes all on one disk. These people who are writing think that everyone is going to go out and purchase each seasons box sets at $40 each. Hello people?!?!? I for one am glad that Fox has put out single disks with episodes on it. And most of these episodes have not been released yet on DVD. I salute the idea of a special Christmas DVD. Bet next year a volume two comes out. Getting all these episodes for such a low price was a great deal. And one of my favorite Simpsons episodes, Mr Plow, is included. My only gripe is that the Mr Burns featurette is only 3 minutes 20 seconds long. If you are thinking of buying this dvd for the featurette don't. Highly recommend for everyone except maybe those that will buy every Simpson box set that Fox puts out.

Great Episodes, But We Want More!,

One reviewer wrote, "I salute the idea of a special Christmas DVD. Bet next year a volume two comes out." I also salute the idea of a special Winter-themed DVD, but I *hate* getting a DVD with only five episodes on it, crossing my fingers that maybe they'll release a "volume 2" at some point! Come on, folks, what the heck are we waiting for? I'm not getting any younger, you know. This set gets five stars because I love the Simpsons, and yes, Mr. Plow is one of the Best. Episodes. Ever. But still, that episode will be out when season 4 comes out. Are we really going to have to wait another year for season 4? This is a really sneaky way to extract even more dollars from us, Fox Home Entertainment. I wonder how many sales you're losing due to making consumers angry...

I loved "The Simpsons" right from the first episode I ever watched (1997's "The Cartridge Family"), and I already have the first season on dvd (hope to be getting the other 2 really soon). Anyway, I got "Christmas With The Simpsons" on Christmas, and I admit that I hadn't laughed that hard in ages. The show's witty humor comes out full - throttle, and every episode is sure to warm your heart. The first episode of the dvd is possibly the most significant episode in the series. "Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire" was the very first episode of the series. It aired originally on December 17, 1989, and television hasn't been the same since. In this premiere, Bart gets a tattoo. Homer must spend the Christmas money to get it removed, but he's not worried because he has his Christmas bonus to look forward to. Until his boss Mr. Burns decide to cut it. Their Christmas in limbo, a friend recommends that Homer go to the racetrack to bet on dogs. But he bets on the loser, a mutt named Santa's Little Helper. But the day is saved when Homer and Bart adopt the dog, and it's the best Christmas present they ever got. "Mr. Plow" really has nothing to do with Christmas, but it's still my favorite episode. Homer starts a successful snow plow business called Mr. Plow. He makes a goldmine of cash. His best friend Barney Gumble thinks that by copying Homer, he too can be a successful human being. It turns out that Barney's business, Plow King, is even more successful than Homer's (Linda Ronstadt even appears in a comercial for it). Gripped by jealousy, Homer pulls the ultimate revenge plot on Barney. But soon, he realizes what he did was wrong and saves his life. My favorite episode. "Miracle On Evergreen Terrace" is my seconnd favorite. Waking up early to get first dibs on presents, Bart accidentally burns down the Christmas trees. With the gifts turned to a fiery ash, Bart burries the remains in the front yard and says that burglars stole everything. The town feel sorry for them and, in a direct take - off of "It's A Wonderful Life", gives them gifts and money. But soon, the truth is discovered and the town takes all their stuff. "Grift Of The Magi" ties with "Simpsons Roasting on An Open Fire" as my favorite. Bart is put in a wheelchair, forcing Springfield Elementary to build a ramp for him. But the school is unable to pay for the construction. A corporation takes over the school. Much to Lisa's dismay, they stop teaching and ask kids rediculous questions about toys. Lisa and Bart soon discover that they are using the kids to help design Funzo, the perfect Christmas gift. They soon dicover that Funzo is programmed to destroy all other toys. The kids go off to save the day - with help from Homer and special guest Gary Coleman, of course. "She Of Little Faith" is my least favorite because it has Richard Gere. Homer and Bart destroy the town's church with a model rocket, and Mr. Burns turns it into a casino. Lisa is disgusted and becomes a budist with Gere's help. The end. I highly recommedn this dvd. It will fill your stocking with holiday spirit!

Great Simpsons Holiday DVD...,

I bought this DVD for my brother for Christmas, so I opened it up to see if the disk was broken and I ended up watching it.
"Simpsons roasting on an Open Fire" is a classic. I'll never get tired of Homer dressing up as Santa to bring in extra money because Marge had to spend all of the money on removing Bart's tattoo. The stupidest Christmas episode, in my opinion, is the one with Gary Coleman. The school shuts down because Principal Skinner had to pay Fat Tony $2,000 for a broken wheelchair ramp, so the school ends up being bought by a toy company. Anyway, great DVD for the Simpsons fan who has everything, and wants more. ``Katrina

Last year I bought this Simpsons Christmas DVD and it is good and has some really good Christmas and winter themed episodes from The Simpsons and the best is Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, and I also liked Mr. Plow, Miracle on Evergreen Terrace, and She of Little Faith but didn't like Gift of the Magi which only had one funny moment but was mostly very unfunny! This DVD is good but lacking any good special features!

Good buy here. This dvd has the first 4 or 5(i can't remember)early christmas episodes. In the first episode, they sound totaly different. The most funny thing about this dvd, is that when you look at maggie with her coat on, she looks like a star. LOL!!! But back to buisness, this is a great dvd, and definatley worth buying. I recemend this to your collection

This is nice offbeat answer to the endless Rudolf and Frosty movies that go on ;)
Even my kid has asked for it a couple times. In this collection; you have: Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, Mr Plow, Miracle on Evergreen Terrace, Grift of the Magi, She of Little Faith and the the Mr Burns Finest Moments Featurette. Overall they are not bad. The featurette I could care less about. One nice aspect of this DVD is the theme of Christmas as you will not have to sift through the box sets if you have them. However, one problem is the missing play all option. I docked it one point for that. Now if they would only make the Treetop of Horror into one set!

This is a solid collection of Simpsons Christmas episodes. Although "Mr. Plow" isn't technically a Christmas episode it does demonstrate what Jesus would do if He had tricked His best friend and rival snow-plower into taking an impossible and life-threatening job. The other four episodes are all straight-up holiday classics. However, while the Mr. Burns "featurette" is amusing, it falls short of being fantastic. While some episodes may be available in other collections, there's no disk swapping or hunting for the one you want involved with this DVD. There is a significant delay when accessing the various options on the navigational menus, which is unfortunate because delayed gratification and Christmas don't go together too well these days. Still, it's Our Favorite Family that we've come to spend the holidays with, and that means putting up with minor quirks and idiosyncrasies. Because whether it's Homer in or out of a Santa suit strangling the boy, or Maggie trying to trick Lisa back into the spirit of the season with a candy cane, or Bart drinking a dozen glasses of water to make sure he gets to the Christmas tree - and gifts - first, or turning the Venetian blinds so Grandpa can't see in the house, or Marge telling Homer to leave the Mr. Plow jacket *on*, these are the memories that will warm our hearts for Christmases to come. As long as you have this DVD, that is. Now somebody pass me a bloody spearhead cookie, please. Mmmmmmm, spearhead.

The forever arguable Greatness of Simpsons,
This review is from: The Simpsons - Christmas (DVD)
Okay, basically there are three really good episodes on this DVD, and two somewhere between okay and good. There are two episodes with obvious relevance to Christmas, one where Christmas comes in in the middle, one where the only connection is the snow on the ground."Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire"- 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. It's the first half hour episode ever made, and has a strong Christmas connection throughout, but you can own this on the first season DVD. "Mr. Plow"- 9.5 out of 10. A wonderful episode in which Homer gets a job plowing, but Barney does, too, and steals his business. "Miracle on Evergreen Terrace"- 7.5 out of 10. It's a good episode with a bad ending. Bart accidentally burns the Christmas tree and presents, hides it, and claims a burglar took it. A better episode from this time period would have been "Marge be not Proud," which relates to Christmas at the end. "Grift of the Magi"- 7 out of 10. An evil toy named Funzo must be stopped. It doesn't have a great plot or a great ending. This episode is a good example of how the Simpsons have gone way downhill in recent years. They do, however, commonly have guest stars now, which is good. Gary Coleman guest stars as himself in this episode. Christmas comes in at the end. "She of Little Faith"- 6 out of 10. Lisa becomes a Buddhist because the church loses its holiness when Mr. Burns puts advertisements and vendors in it. Richard Gere is a guest voice, and Christmas comes in at the end. "Mr. Burns Featurette"- 2 out of 10. Like the "Kang and Kodos Featurette," this is boring and it's a waste of time to watch it. At least the "Kang and Kodos Featurette" fit in with the Halloween theme, but this doesn't go with the Christmas one. |
