I've been on a Simpsons retro gaming kick. I'm trying to get all the games back I rememeber as a kid and the Simpsons games were some of my favorites. I have Bart VS. World, Bartman Meets Radioactive Man, and of course this one. Bart VS. the Space Mutants is by far the hardest of the three. I actually had this game on Sega as a kid, and remember it being harder for Sega than NES. The reason being is I played this without a Walkthrough I got online. Without a walkthrough this game is almost impossible. I remember taking forever to figure out how to beat the first level, then when I finnally did I would die right away in the second level. What makes this game tough is it's not always clear where to go or what to do. A good example is on the 4th level there's two invisible platforms you have to jump on to beat the dinosaur. It can be frustrating to try to find something you can't see. However, don't let that deter you from this game. Like most NES games it's all about figuring out patterns and timing. With a Walkthrough or game FAQ this becomes a playable game. It's tough but there's only 5 levels all together. What makes it challenging is there's no continues in the game and two hits on Bart will cost you a life. You have to navigate the levels inch by inch and if you die you have to go back and play the previous levels to get back where you left off. With only 5 levels you would think it's a short game but again, it's challenging so beating a level takes a while. Once you beat a level though it becomes easier the next time around. For instance, I can blow by the first 3 levels but keep dying at the end of the 4th. The 5th level is the nuclear power plant which is a long level of figuring out combinations to beat the game. I've never been to that level but am close after a week of playing the game again after all these years. I would suggest either of the other two Simpsons games before this one. (Especially Bart Vs. World) However, if you love the Simpsons games definitely add this one to your collection. Just make sure you use a game walkthrough when playing this one.

I can't believe no one has reviewed this game so far. This is one of the NES's most interesting games, because it seemed like EVERYONE was playing it back in the day. Just when you think you were the only one who owned Bart vs. the Space Mutants, think again!
I figure I mine as well drop a review for this game to celebrate the Simpsons 20th season coming up.... later today (it's 3:30 am at the time I write this). 20 years of the greatest comedy ever created! Well, the game is REALLY hard (it's the NES, what do you expect!!) The very first level is a skateboard level where you have to move around objects, and jump over them. It's a lot harder than it sounds. Maybe with some serious practice the game gets easier, I don't know, but I was struggling BIG time with this game as a kid, and continue to struggle with it. My favorite memory was the giant Nintendo Power poster of this games cover that I hung up on the wall for years and years, until I thought I was too old to have posters on my wall so I took them all down. I still kept it though!

The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants gets my vote as one of the hardest games in NES history. I've beaten the game with the genie and also without the genie, but, in neither way, it was that easy. The first, but all-important, level is pretty easy with plenty of practice, but the hardest part of it is right at the beginning where you need to jump on the trash can to grab the 1-Up without touching the jumping mutant. Make absolutely sure to grab every Ups in this level as much as possible. I believe that there are about 6 Ups for a total of 8 lives (one before the Wet paint sign, one after the phone booth, one in the bushes during skateboarding, and one at the K sign for 3 Ups). Be sure to grab all coins as possible, and only get 1 cherry bomb and 5 rockets. Be sure to get a magnet which will be useful in level 3. The second level is very challenging, and a few lives will be lost in this one. Make sure to jump up and down many times on each trash can. After something comes out, be sure to do it again. One trash can is very special as it really gives 5 bonus offerings at 5 separate times. After a while, this level is pretty easy yet you will lose a few lives. Also, most people do not realize that, you notice that cement thing and there are rotating lollipops over it? Actually, the whole thing isn't even necessary. At the second up-and-down board over the cement pit, all you got to do is jump on it three times, and it will become a floating device, letting you to skip everything in sight. A huge lifesaver, yes. The third level can be viewed difficult for a while, but it gets pretty easy with some practice. The carnival games are all-important, and be sure to win them all. The magnet is used for the number game where you activate it before the game is started for cheating. At the diving tower, you could always do it over and over for lots of coins, thus more lives. But it gets boring after a while. So I routinely skip it. Probably the hardest part of level 3 is the hot air walk which can be difficult to master. However, this is my trick. When you are initially at the top of the pipe, I count 1..2..3 before I move to the right. Keep doing the counting trick because really, it has been very successful for me. It is worth the effort to jump into Krusty's mouth when you get to the top because there is a bonus room giving 15 coins plus 1-Up. The rest of the way gets easier with the exception of the Ferris wheel. So, be sure to use the A + B as soon as you see the first cart appear. In my opinion, I would skip the center for 1-Up and go straight right ahead and finish it off because the wheel is just hard enough. The fourth level appears...wow...it's the most difficult level of the whole game. It's that brutally hard and very difficult to master. I died in that level so many times that I needed the genie to work on that very often just to master parts of it. The most difficult at first is the jumping part in the jungle, especially on the crocodiles on the pond. That's a really hard part. Then, the jumping monkey...difficult as hell until the gun is reached. Then the hardest part comes...the lava jumping and the popping blocks jumping. When all are mastered, the level isn't even over yet. We got so many difficult obstacles left to go. The rock falling...then Bart got to jump over the floating rock, and then he got to jump over 14 dinosaur bones. This one was really hard for me because of the stupid birds getting in the way. Remember this tip, when there is a moment that the bird will fly down in an arch movement, make sure to jump back to the previous bone and wait for it to fly out, and then you can keep going. The second bird that does it, just stay where you are and wait for the bird to complete the arch. Honestly, it is just as best to preserve two hits before facing the huge dinosaur head. He is pretty easy to defeat, and all you have to do it jump over on 2 ledges before getting on the head. Once there, you can just wait for it to spit fire before you can go back and hit his head again. After him, the level gets pretty easy thereon. The fifth level is the easiest of the whole game...thank goodness. My suggestion to you is to draw a map, showing 5 levels. Then you just mark the walls, switch walls, elevators, and doors because if you do not do this, you will not win the game...period. The 16th rod only can be found when you approach Maggie when you have found all 15 of them already and you just push B to end the game. Wow...I honestly have to say...The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is one of the hardest games in NES history, and this game is that brutally challenging. A lot of gamers will attest to this, and most novices have given up in the first level. This has a lot to do with misunderstanding in what to do in the levels. The creators actually made sure that the game can be beaten by incorporating a lot of 1-Ups which were big helps. Some people have complained that the controls were the reasons why the game sucked. Honestly, they were just perfectly fine to me. It is a matter of jumping control: soft tap, medium tap, and hard tap. I can't stress this enough: Mastering the movement of Bart is the key of winning this game. The graphics were excellent for its time, and it's very good. To much of many's dismay, the best part of the game was actually the challenge itself. Thus, that's why The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is a very well-made game and deserves a lot of credit for being a great Nintendo game made. This game has gotten my everlasting respect. For anyone else who hasn't beaten the game, you have to keep trying and trying. It takes heaps of practice. It takes days of practice. Use the genie at first to master parts of the game. When you have beaten it, then beat the game without one. And anyone else who have beaten it without the genie, you got my respect, and I know how much of work went into this in terms of trying to beat the game. It is unbelievably hard.
