It's finally here. Those fluffy clouds, those rolling hills, those...nuclear cooling towers. Rip through the package faster than Barney sucks up a sixer of Duff, pop in the CD-ROM with the vigor of Homer devouring his morning donut, and discover a disc that would make even Ned Flanders dang-diddly-darn disappointed.

The gist of the CD is to wander around Springfield visiting about a dozen Simpsons sights - such as their church and house. Collect things and play games along the way. Have a good time.

But it's not going to happen. Movement around town is restricted to block by block. See something interesting along the way? Too bad. However, take a nice long pause at every corner, where the game stalls for 10 seconds to load from the disc. Meandering from site to site sometimes requires walking a dozen or more blocks - stopping and loading, stopping and loading.

Granted, once there, the actual places are a little better. The graphics are dead-on, and the jokes are OK. But after the material runs, you're back on the stop-and-go path. As Homer would say, "Lousy no-good rotten disc."

The Last Words:

Mark: This Springfield consists mostly of facades and false fronts. There's no there there.

Judy: I was looking forward to really getting to traipse about Springfield - and have been left on the bus. I am saddened even further by the gravely missed opportunity to create wonderfulness. Shame on you, Fox.

Joe: The 23-page introductory book was hilarious, which made the disc all the less bearable. As a resident of Springfield, Illinois, the reputed home of the Simpsons, I'm having a cow, man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Simpsons Fans, November 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Simpsons: Virtual Springfield (CD-ROM)
Although I would hope anyone could enjoy this game, it probably would be best for Simpsons fans because of the humor and references to specific episodes that others may have not seen. While not too challenging, it is lots of fun and after you win (by collecting all the cards hidden around the town), a link is given to a website, which gives you more ideas of what to do in Springfield. Bottom line: Great fun, but not for serious gamers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great looking but thin on gameplay, December 1, 1999

On the postive side, it looks just like the TV show, and it contains all the Simpsons characters and Springfield locations that you'd expect to see. For a while, it's fun to poke around and see what happens when you click on this door or that drawer. Unfortunately, there's just not enough to do in terms of gameplay. There doesn't seem to be much object of the game other than to collect hidden "trading cards". If you're a Simpsons fan, you'll enjoy it for a while, but it's ultimately kind of a disappointment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes not even The Simpsons are enough..., July 29, 2000

This review is from: The Simpsons: Virtual Springfield (CD-ROM)
The Simpsons: Virtual Springfield has two major assets in that the animation and the voices come straight out of the television series. They are extremely entertaining, and practically perfect. But Virtual Springfield is ultimately boring and misguided--it's fun exploring Springfield for a while, but once you realize what the limitations are, and how little variety there is in the things you can see, hear, and do, it gets old kind of quickly. The game's "through-line" of collecting cards doesn't really do much to enhance the experience. If you're a diehard Simpsons fan, you will find much to admire about Virtual Springfield, but there is ultimately little to like or to give more than an hour or so of your time.
