Beware of using these transformers...,
By CraigLee (Annapolis, MD) - See all my reviews

My company deployed several of these units at overseas locations. One location had a problem with a unit getting very hot, so I brought it into the lab for analysis. What I found was appalling. Every solder joint was cold and a slight tug was able to break it loose or break the few remaining wire strands loose from the joint. Most joints had nearly half of the wire strands broken away from the soldered connection. This effectively cut the current carrying capacity in half.I then pulled every unit from our stock room (approximately 12) and individually opened them for inspection. Without exception, everyone was of equal crappiness. After reworking every connection in every unit, I set one up for bench testing. I ran the unit at 50% of the rated power for 4 hours and noticed no anomalies. I then increased the load to approximately 90% of the rated value and within 30 minutes the plastic 110V connector on the front of the unit began to melt, so I shut the test down. The model that I tested was the Simran 3000 watt unit, but I have no doubt that every model that comes from that company is of equal workmanship. The units are built in China, with blatantly unqualified labor. If you are handy with a soldering iron, these units can be made to do what they are supposed to do. That's why I gave it one star. I would, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE, use one of these things without opening and reworking it first. I would also de-rate its maximum rating to 60%. In other words, I would not operate the 750 watt unit at loads over 450 watts. Be warned, this is a dangerous piece of junk if not reworked!

I bought this unit recently with the intention of giving it to someone oversea. The unit arrived with a large dented front (where the socket is), most likely due to inadequate packaging. Only loose foam was used and the unit would work it way down the bottom of the box in no time due to its huge weight and what happened during the entire journey was not hard to imagine. So before taking it oversea, I though I should give it a good check. I set it to Down Convert mode from 240V to 120V which was the mode it was intended to be used. Then with an Ohm meter I check the input and out resistance. The input resistance was about 7 Ohms but the output resistance was open circuit, instead of about 3.5 Ohms, half of the input side. Next I checked the Protective Earth from I/P to O/P, and instead of getting less than 1 Ohm of resistance, I measured 33 Ohms. I removed the four nuts to open both front and back cover, and immediately spotted a dangling wire which was not attached to anything. This turned out to be part of the output which explained why the O/P was open circuited. Most solder joints were not done right, they all used solder as glue to attach wire to terminal or to other wires, instead of putting the wire through the hole of the terminal first before soldering (in the case of wire to terminal); or twisting two wires together first before soldering them together. Also, the solder joints did look "dry" and off, some did not have enough solder. Whoever did the soldering job did not receive proper training or did not have good equipment to do the job. The Protective earths from the I/P to the O/P relied on the long screw to connect them together. The screw had low resistance alright, but the lug that loop through the screw did not make direct and good contact to the screw, partly due to the glue that was used as insulation on the lamination of the iron core. The glue somehow hold the lug mid way and stop it from making contact to the screw. On the plus side, the winding looked solid with adequate glue applied to them as well as the lamination core.

Does the job, good and consistent and great value for money. One negative is that it is very heavy! So you can't really travel with it unless you REALLY need to but it's very easy to use and switch from step up and step down.

I got the same product from the other company to use for an Indian mixer. whenever we switchon the mixer the fuse used to blow off.The mixer is of around 350 Watts and the product I bought was of 500 watts. Then I returned the product and got this one... the product is working great... Without any issue till now... The only problem I see is... its very very heavy. Thanks ********

purchased this to run our "heavy duty" mixer (food processor) from India. Used it for about 6 months, no complaints!

I have a mixer from India and i needed a step up converter and was looking to buy from local electronic shops. These shops were charging $45 and above and i had to drive down 25 miles. Thanks to you guys, the product arrived in good shape and as promised.

This "product" came with dents, in pieces, wrong product it does not step up but only down and it has missing pieces. Do not buy from this provider. They are just trying to steal your money.1 star because there is no chance to put zero or negative stars... I feel lucky I am in the US to be able to return it for free, but I am very sorry for the people from other countries, that will have to pay a bunch of money to return it back and guess...many will choose not to return it because it will be very expensive.. So, a money robbery in the end... Please do really make case of this negative ratings. I would imagine that the same people who are stealing our money are the ones who write reports talking good of this products and rating them with more than 1 star...

I had a CD player from Europe that I was loathe to throw out and unlike the simple converter from "Wally World" this did the trick. It's a bit heavy for my wife with sharp edges, so mind the kids and don't drop it on your foot (or a wood floor). Other than that, for small appliances, this is dead on, a great product.

I'm using this with an appliance that runs on 220V and that needs a 550W of energy. Haven't found anything wrong till now.
