NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHERS......,
By
This review is from: Sin No More (Hardcover)
Reverend Curtis Black is back, and seemingly on his very best behavior. So while Curtis is not creating any new drama, he doesn't have to; there is enough residual old drama from his past to pack this storyline chock-full of the usual Black nonsense. Ex-mistress Tabitha Charles has given birth to the good Reverend's love child....and wife Charlotte is furious. She has forbidden Curtis from having anything to do with baby Curtina; and Curtis is struggling with abiding by his wife's wishes and his need to be a father to his child...whatever the circumstances. To add to the confusion, David, Charlotte's ex-lover and the father of her son Matthew, has just become aware that he has a son and is determined to become a part of Matthew's life. When visitation does not work out to his liking, he threatens to take Charlotte and Curtis to court for full custody of Matthew. And the drama does not end there.....
I have always been a fan of this series, but this book just seemed to me to be somewhat repetitious. How much more can we take of this churchgoing couple? Trues fans of the Curtis Black series will not want to miss this one...but there is nothing creative or standout about this novel. DYB

What's Done in the Dark.............,
By Novelist LJ "Lacha Mitchell" (Durham, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sin No More (Hardcover)
Pastor Curtis Black was back and ready for a new beginning in Sin No More by Kimberla Lawson Roby. He had been ousted from two previous churches because of his philandering ways. Pastor Black brought shame to the body of Christ, his family and himself. No more lies, no more cheating, he was a new man and he was determined to get it right.
He started a new church with, his wife, Charlotte, and she and his son, Matthew, were still standing by his side. Curtis was a new man, redeemed from his past, but the consequences of his sins have come back to haunt him. Tabitha, Curtis' former lover and their baby girl, Curtina, who was conceived in sin were back. If that was not enough, there was an enemy in the camp who was trying to put him out of his own church. Tabitha was coming to get what she thought belonged to her, and married or not Curtis Black was going to be hers. Tabitha still loved Curtis and was ready to use baby Curtina as her weapon of power in order to have her man. Tabitha was ready for the battle, but she was not at all prepared for the war and bit off more than she could chew by provoking Charlotte and trying to destroy the man of God. Charlotte was a woman scorned more than once, and this was the last straw. She was determined to keep Curtis away from Tabitha and Curtina if she had to die in the process. At times, she wished she would have divorced Curtis when she found out about Curtina. She could not allow that child into her house or family and it was up to her to find a way to keep her out. Charlotte had a few secrets and misdeeds of her own, and as she tried to keep them covered and placed blame on Curtis, the love and trust that God was in the process of resurrecting in their marriage was on the verge of being put asunder by man and dirty deeds. It was a great book; I could barely put it down and I was done with it too quickly. I could relate to the storyline and it was too real for me. It is an excellent read! It is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time, but truly is exemplary of our God and how he cannot be mocked. I highly recommend this book to all who would like to see how all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. Time to End the Curtis Black Saga,
By
This review is from: Sin No More (Hardcover)
Roby is an excellent writer and her work is well-edited. She does a great job revealing the consequences of affairs and infidelity, such as illigetimate children and medical issues. However, it is definitely time to end the Curtis Black drama. Black's character has been drawn out long enough. This would be a good time to end the series. If not, it would definitely be overkill. Nonetheless, I did enjoy reading the book.

The More Things Change...The More They Remain The Same,
By
This review is from: Sin No More (Hardcover)
A witty, page-turning, scandalizing tale about marriage, family, church folks and drama-filled situations, Kimberla Lawson Roby's Sin No More (the fifth novel in the series) brings us another chapter in the Black household. The Reverend Curtis Black is back. His days of cheating, lying and scheming are over, and he promises to sin no more, as he claims he is reformed and a changed man. Or so he believes, but we all know that actions speak louder than words.
When pressures mount because of drama with his baby's momma, and the interim pastor who wants a more vested interest in the church that he founded, will Curtis really be able to sin no more? Let us not forget the First Lady, Charlotte. She has always been Curtis' match as she seems to have her share of skeletons rattling around in the closet and believes what is good for the goose is good for the gander. As she continues to mourn the death of her daughter, Charlotte refuses to allow Curtis to spend time with his infant daughter, Curtina, and she will do everything to protect her son, Matthew, from his biological father, David, the ex-husband of her cousin, Anise. As usual, she is planning and scheming and it is not good. Sin No More is a entertaining and heartfelt story about the trials and tribulations of marriage, the strength of families, and how what is done in the dark will come to the light. While some scenes were over the top, and others a little predictable, fans of the Reverend Curtis Black will welcome his return and quickly turn the pages to find out what is going to happen next. As soon as the last page is turned, many will wonder when is the next book going to be released. I recommend Sin No More to readers who cannot get enough of Curtis and Company. I have followed the entire line of this series, but I was taken aback how the ending seemed rushed. It went from everything being revealed to a year later and I am just not happy with how it was not developed thoroughly.
I also thought more mention would be made of Janise and Carl and the new arrival, but perhaps there will be yet another story in the Curtis Black saga. Even though I was a bit unhappy with this one, I would buy the next one as I am a fan of her writing.

Only got halfway through this one before I lost total interest. However, I have enjoyed KLR's books in the past but this is the LAST one of Curtis Black that I'll ever be reading. Hopefully, this saga will be laid to rest. I look forward to immersing myself in some new material from KLR.

"It's Time For Curtis Black To Come Down From The Pulpit",
By
This review is from: Sin No More (Hardcover)
I guess Ms. Lawson Roby has run out of original material for Curtis Black. He's boring and cuppy-like, the rest of the cast was annoying except maybe Charlotte and Tabitha. Curtis spent a great deal of the storyline apologizing for this and apologizing for that. This is not the same Curtis Black from novels past.

I literally read this book in one day. I enjoyed so much reading the Reverend Black series, regardless of what anyone says about the last book. I thought I knew what was coming next everytime I turned the page, but she literally wowed me everytime. I would have loved to have more pages just because I could not stop reading. Keep it ub Ms. Roby, I love your books!!!

No more Sins and no more Reverend Curtis Black...,

...don't get me wrong, Ms. Roby served up a tale loaded with drama and a certified page turner. BUT...I'm a little tired of the Good Reverend series.
Main character Curtis Black is back and this time he's trying to do the right thing - he's fathered a child outside of his marriage and he's trying to do the honorable thing by pleasing his wife, but that leaves him yearning to spend time with his new daughter. Then you have his wife Charlotte who has to live up to her own surprising indiscretions when they show up on her doorstep. And let's not forget Curtis' new baby momma - hell bent on maintaining a place in Curtis' life. This story was told in true Kimberla Lawson Roby style... My only problem were some indiscretions that were completely left dangling in the end.... |
