Review of "Sinbad of the Coast Guard", December 11, 2005
This review is from: Sinbad of the Coast Guard (Hardcover)
"Sinbad of the Coast Guard" is a wonderful book for adults and
children about a homeless puppy who gets sneaked onboard a
Coast Guard ship by one of the sailors and grows up to be the world famous mascot of not only his ship, the USS Campbell, but
also the mascot of the entire Coast Guard.
It is a story of how Sinbad received his name, how exactly he
got on the ship, his life on board with his shipmates, most of
this occurring during the height of World War II on the stormy
waters of the North Atlantic.
Sinbad and his crew had some real scary encounters with Nazi
U boats who had only one objective: to sink the Campbell and
any other Allied ships they could destroy. In one incident, the
Campbell ends up sinking the German sub, but is severely damaged
in the process and has to be towed to port.
Sinbad eventually retired and lived out his life at the Barnegat Light, New Jersey Coast Guard Station where he was buried with
honors and his gravestone survives to this day as does his
memory which will endure forever thanks to "Sinbad of the Coast
Guard".

Nice but not perfect reproduction, April 12, 2010
This review is from: Sinbad of the Coast Guard (Hardcover)
The true story of Sinbad the Coast Guard dog is a delight for dog lovers, and a nice book for kids, although some oversensitive parents might get their PC knickers in a bunch over the depiction of Eskimos and Arabs. This edition is a reproduction of the original from the 1940s, minus the map of Sinbad's adventures that appeared in the first edition. With the exception of the map, all of the other two-color (orange and black) illustrations are included. However, compared to the crispness of those in the original (which I have), they are presented here with somewhat less sharpness and detail. The original book had no photographs, and a photo section has been added to the new edition. Overall, in spite of its imperfections, a book worth having.
