About the Author

Marie P. Croall lives in Cary, North Carolina, with her husband and four cats. She has written for Marvel, DC Comics, Moonstone Books, Devils Due, and Harris Comics. She has also completed a self-published graphic novel and a short film. Marie has spent much of her life reading fables and legends from the Middle East and Asia and enjoys discovering new things about different cultures.

Clint Hilinski grew up in Esko, Minnesota, where he became interested in art at an early age. He continued studying art at the University of Wisconsin, Superior, where he received his bachelor's degree in fine art. Hilinski has worked as an illustrator for DC, Image, Dark Horse, and many other companies. He has worked on titles such as Justice League of America, Xena, Voltron, and GI Joe. Although the front cover is very enticing, I think that this is the weakest adaptation of the collection. Several Sinbad stories are narrated, in too brief a fashion. Although one might flesh out some themes from it, the stories seem to lack any motive. How was the sultan amused by these, I cannot answer. I would have been bored. It has good graphics, but poor retelling. Although it shares the chapter structure of other Graphic Legends, it lacks a thematic thread. On the other hand, its plotlessness may give students a challenge to flesh out motives and themes from a story that lacks one.

I bought this, and several other, graphic novel for my 7- and 10-year-old boys. They LOVE graphic novels (such as the Tin Tin and Bone series), so I thought I might introduce them to classic characters and stories this way. Sinbad was the first one they both read. They had never heard of him before! They really enjoyed this book, though they were disappointed that the sea serpent pictured on the cover is only in one drawing in the story!
