5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
This is a wonderful picture book about how a friendship can work between two friends who are different from each other. It teaches children how they can be helpful, thoughtful, and caring to a child with autism. A great teaching tool to use with school age children who interact with autistic children. The illustrations are beautiful and inviting. The story is well...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not realistic
I bought this book to explain to my 5-year-old why his friend that he has grown up with is different. My son started asking questions because by age 5, the difference between the two boys is obvious. This book made the child with autism seem like any typical child. The only difference appeared to be that other kids were "annoyed" with him. I didn't like that. So he...

This is an awesome children's book, well written for ages 3-8. The illustrations are the best I have seen for a childrens book. I donated two copies to my local library.

As a special educator of students with autism, I found this book to very useful. I envision using this book as a regular addition in my class library. It teaches great lessons about acceptance, friendship, and differences. With additions like this book to a class library, students would be exposed to others like them and those that are different. There needs to be more books like this one that shed positive light on children with autism. Children are naturally accepting of others and this book helps display that acceptance!

It's a wonderful book with amazing illustrations. It's inviting to read and would be great for kids who are in the early stages of reading or as an educational tool for anyone who works with or is friends with a child with autism. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars While Other Friendships Go Up in Smoke, Theirs Will Still Be Oak, October 20, 2009
This review is from: Since We're Friends: An Autism Picture Book (Perfect Paperback)
An unnamed boy of indeterminate early grade age describes his friend Matt, who has autism. Matt is described and identified as autistic, but his friend just lets Matt's autism be a background factoid and not the focus of their friendship.

Matt's friend describes some of Matt's challenges, such as his difficulty in following directions during basketball practice; his aversion for loud, painful noises; reading the responses of other people and generally making sense out of a world that is often confusing. The young narrator says that he shows Matt what to do and explains things to him "because we are friends."

The boys are of different races. They generally come across as being cheerful and Matt is identified by his expression when confronted with a surprise, an unpleasant sensory experience or some confusing directive.

This author is brilliant and I like the way the message of acceptance and being a good friend to somebody with autism is featured. Let's hope the message this book contains will encourage children to regard peers with different abilities in a tolerant light. My Best Friend Will is a good companion book to this one.

Their friendship makes me think of the Cole Porter classic, "Friendship." They have beautifully demonstrated that "while other friendships go up in smoke, ours will still be oak, rah da da da da, be beepoom baa."

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaching Autism Awareness to Little Kids! BRAVO, June 25, 2008
This review is from: Since We're Friends: An Autism Picture Book (Perfect Paperback)
As an author of children's books that teach autism awareness to typical peers, I found this picture book to be a refreshing introduction tool to use for preschool through younger elementary kids. Through vibrant, vivid and kid-friendly illustrations, the book provides an excellent resource for teachers, family members, sibling support groups and community members who are introducing autism to little kids. By teaching autism awareness to typical peers, it demystifies autism with hopes of creating more welcoming and understanding environment for kids on the autism spectrum.
