5.0 out of 5 stars Big up To MJ!!!
This CD is and always will be a classic and a standard by which all other 2-step will go by. There are very few 2-step producers that can do what he did on this CD. 3.0 out of 5 stars House to a Drum & Base Beat
I bought this in response to the overwhelming reviews I read everywhere about this, but upon listening to it, I was unimpressed to find that it is merely house with a drum & base beat, nothing more earth-shattering than that. Lots of vocals. It's good creative work, but it is only essential if you're into house and drum & base at the same time.

This CD is and always will be a classic and a standard by which all other 2-step will go by. There are very few 2-step producers that can do what he did on this CD. He was one of the first major 2-step producers in the scene to really get the hype and hit the charts the way that very few dance music can, even in the UK. And the thing that makes him different from the others such as The Artful Dodger and Wookie, is that on this album there is such a mix of 2-step and just chill out grooves. He is not trying for the power of Crazy love or Atitude all through the CD. If you have heard about 2-step or heard 2-step, and want to get more, BUY THIS CD!! If you like house, Vocal D&B or any music for that matter, this is definetly one that will make people's heads turn with it's soulful vocals, hard hitting bass lines and smooth poping break beats. Also keep your eyes open for anything that MJ Cole touches as it is all perfect. That is why he has done remixes for people such as Mariah Carey and De La Soul. And for that person from San Fransisco who said that this is house with a D&B beat and vocals, he is almost right. But the thing that makes the difference between this and most D&B these days, is that this has SOUL(and it is not nearly as fast). America, 2-step is coming to get'Cha!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 2-step this is your leader, January 27, 2001

AFTER A SHORT STUDIO CAREER AS THE MOST PROFICIENT REMIXER IN THE UK DANCE SCENE, CLASSICALLY TRAINED COLE HAS TURNED HIS ATTENTION TO MORE ORIGINAL SOUNDS. THE ALBUM OPENS WITH SPARSE PIANO AND SOON WIDENS TO SOME OF THE MOST LUSH SOUNDS THAT YOU WILL HEAR. THE LISTENER IS TAKEN ON A GUIDED TOUR OF THE CREAM OF UK GARAGE AND 2-STEP. COMPLETE WITH VOCAL HITS FANTASTIC MINIMAL PERCUSSION TRADEMARK STRINGS AND SEXY VOCALS BY SOME OF THE SCENES TOP MCS AND SINGERS. TOP THIS OFF WITH BASSLINES THAT WILL SCARE YOUR GRANDMOTHER. THE SINGLES HAVE BEEN GIVEN HEAVY ROTATION BY DJS FROM ALL DANCE SCENES, WITH THE REMIXES BY MARCUS INTALEX AND TODD EDWARDS TEARING APART DRUM & BASS AND HOUSE PARTIES WORLDWIDE. ,MUST LISTEN TRACKS INCLUDE THE SINGLES SINCERE AND CRAZY LOVE, AS WELL AS THE HEAVY RAGGA INSPIRED BANDELERO DESPERADO. MJ COLE IS A MAN OF THE MOMENT, AND YOU WILL HEAR MORE ABOUT HIM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylistically hip and smooth, May 9, 2001

This review is from: Sincere (Audio CD)
I have M2 to thank for getting me into this relatively unknown artist (at least in the US). I caught a glimpse of pure heaven when I saw the video for "Crazy Love". Garage, or two-step as it is known sounds like drum & bass mixed with the smooth melodies and vocals of r&b. Definitely something I normally don't hear on the radio. The copy of "Sincere" I picked up included two remixes of "Sincere" and "Crazy Love". I am not a huge drum & bass because of the minimalist beats and melodies but two step or garage I can dig. The music has killer beats while the listener can sink their teeth right into the melodies which are catchy enough to keep this listener happy. I thoroughly enjoyed what I heard and am interested in this new subgenre of dance music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stylistically Superlative Album, April 12, 2001

MJ Cole - 'Sincere' I think his name will be associated with cool, fresh, and style for some time. He is the first garage artist star and breakout. And proudly to say, he is a true and all around musician--classically trained, plays several instruments, and is a superb mixer, engineer, remixer and of course much has been made of his brilliant production skills, which adds so much flare to 'Sincere.' And he's also a DJ. Garage is a genre classified under dance music, yet because his compositions have an actual structure, they are looked up upon, unlike much of the derivative dance music being pumped out, as music to stand the test of time. 'Sincere' isn't just dance music, isn't just soul, electro, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, or funk. It is a combination of all that and other things unique to Matt Cole--this debut album and the music from it will be in the music history books. It is just beautiful. It is uplifting. And it's deeply emotional.

So keep a look out for his US release on April 17! ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and Chilled - But sadly nothing mindblowing, April 3, 2001

No doubt you will have heard a collection of MJ Cole's tunes if you are resisdent in and around London, most notably Crazy Love with it's biting string intro, and Sincere, with it's sublime vocals and underplayed beat. The entire album is nicely summed up in the first track "introduction" with innovative use of a piano excerpt and Sincere's vocals mixed in. Gives you gut feeling that this is going to be something special. Sadly, it's not as mindblowing as expected, more an ongoing display of "good".

4.0 out of 5 stars MJ Cole's distinctive sound is a cut above the rest, February 28, 2001
By
This review is from: Sincere (Audio CD)
Excellent, this is the last 3 years of UK garage building up in the underground and un-leashed to an international audience. The main tracks to look out for are "Tired games", "Hold on to Me" and "Crazy Love" with the immaculate voice of Elizabeth Troy on Vocals. "Mj Fm Interlude" takes you underground and into the pirate radio scene in London where UK Garage planted it's roots and of course not forgetting the tittle track "Sincere". This album definitely not for our average Cheezy raver and you have to have some sort of understanding of where the music is coming from to appreciate it, However for those who do it will certainly have you clucking for more !

1.0 out of 5 stars huh?, February 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sincere (Audio CD)
I have no idea why the other reviews here are so high... I bought the Import + 2 bonus. Sorry but maybe its just my music taste. All the songs sound the same! Yes the one single track is ok, but something you'd like hearing once on the radio or in a club, not all the time....

Not a buy recommendation at all.
