5.0 out of 5 stars A true aural bluegrass masterpiece, August 29, 2004
This review is from: Sincerely (Audio CD)
Playing Time - 34:44 -- Today's recording processes allow musicians to work wonders in the studio. Josh Crowe is a fantastic bluegrass musician, and imagine if he could clone himself to create a tenor-singing brother for a set of wonderful duets. "Sincerely" brings us this small miracle. David Johnson is also able to bow multiple fiddles (or play fiddle and dobro) on multiple tracks. It's a great way to capitalize on the overall skills of these artists and create a true aural masterpiece. Kenny Haney does a mighty fine job picking banjo, Zane Fairchild serves up some tasty lead guitar, and Shane Crowe provides solid bass accompaniment.

Born in northern Georgia in 1957, Josh's real name is Wallace. He and his bass-playing brother Wayne performed in the early 1970s as the Blue Ridge Mountain Boys. They toured for many years with Raymond Fairchild and the Crowe Brothers. Four great bluegrass albums were released, and Crowe made regular appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. Josh and Wayne (The Crowe Brothers) released "Regenesis" together, and they were also part of Fairchild's Maggie Valley Boys. After Wayne retired from music in 1993, Josh performed and recorded with David McLaughlin (hear the 1993 Rounder Records project called "Going Back"). Crowe has appeared many times on The Nashville Network, and he and his band were voted one of the best bands in the nation by SPBGMA. In 1990, Crowe won the Guitar Player of the Year Award from SPBGMA.

"Sincerely" is Crowe's debut on the Pinecastle label. He chooses material from Leroy Mack, Don Reno, Jim Eanes, Jimmy Martin, Tom T. and Dixie Hall, Carter Stanley, A.P. Carter, and others. Some numbers like Frankie Brown's "Born to Lose" and Karl Davis' "Country Hall of Fame" have a bouncy country feel, but the band also puts their pedals to the metal on some hard-drivin' bluegrass like Andrew Eddins "It Looks Like the Sun's Gonna Shine." This solo artist debut of Josh Crowe as singer, guitarist, and mandolinist is another milestone in his impressive list of achievements. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
