Sinéad O'Connor is the outspoken and abrasive Irish singer-songwriter famed for a single tear, but to focus on that video alone neglects the rest of her musical career.

She was the product of a troubled upbringing, with divorce, abuse and reform school making their impact. Music was her escape and she recorded her first demo while still at school, and as soon as she left she pulled together a band, Ton Ton Macoute. Although the band was doing well, she left soon after the death of her mother and moved to London, signing a deal with Ensign Records.
