Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Advertising, religion, sex and politics are just a handful of the topics touched on by Tatsuya Ishida's popular Web comic, Sinfest. This first volume collects the first 600 outings of the nearly 10-year-old strip. The cute, slightly raunchy cast of characters includes Slick, the womanizer, Monique, who may or may not be a tramp, the Devil, God and a slew of other demons, angels, animals and humans. While clearly influenced by comic strips such as Peanuts and using takeoffs on some of that strip's familiar setups, Ishida takes his work into dark, politically incorrect directions. The art is likewise a mix of comic strip cute and manga that's accessible to a broad range of readers. Bonuses in this volume include a sampling of Sinfest the College Years, proving that the comic was once raunchier and harsher than its current incarnation. Harsh as it is, Sinfest offers many laughs; it may be brutally funny, but it is dead honest and refreshing. And underneath the shock value of some of its gags is a comic strip very much in the classic newspaper tradition. (June)

5.0 out of 5 stars Way. Too. Funny!, June 16, 2004
I stumbled onto Sinfest at the Keenspot site while browsing the offerings there, and immediately had to go back and read from the first strip. Sinfest is a guilty pleasure; you know it's naughty, but you can't help it.

I like that Mr. Ishida gives God equal billing, and the characters interact with God (and the Devil) in a way that I think a lot of people do--asking frank questions, trying to understand the way things go in life.

The art style is crisp and the subject matter is wickedly sharp--not to mention very, very funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Resistance, December 19, 2002
Tatsuya Ishida, as others have remarked, is god. Maybe not The God, but A god. At least when it comes to comic artistry. His drawings are mature, clear and unlike many other online cartoonists nowadays he doesn't reuse the same cell over and over again.

His characters (while unbelievable as most are) involve you, and frankly you want Monique to do the dirty with Slick, purely for the comedy value. Tatsuya's forays into other areas (such as calligraphy) rock most aggregiously and he should do more of them. Now.

I've been reading and loving Tatsuya's work since a month after he went online and can't believe he still hasn't been picked up for publication in a newspaper or magazine. As a previous reviewer noted, he doesn't cater to the PG or U market, but what he writes is funny, witty and has been more than enough to leave me laughing for minutes after I've finished the day's strip.

Buy this book. And ask him to publish the next couple of years, right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive, April 5, 2005
Quality comic, which I highly recommend. However, you can purchase the books for only $15 on the author's cafepress.com page. He has a link to it on sinfest.net.
