Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 4-Since most materials on signing is available in book or video format, this recording will be a valuable acquisition to expand a signing collection. Intended for children with at least some hearing, it contains seven original songs; six are on the first side. The second side includes one song; signing directions for the other songs; and "My Best Friend Is Deaf (Jonnie's Story)," a story in which Jonalee Folerzynski (Jonnie) talks about being deaf and how she learned to speak. According to Gaia, well-known composer and performer, this will let hearing children grow accustomed to the speech patterns of deaf people. There is a loose, double-sided page of illustrations for the words signed in the songs, which should be copied for replacement as needed. This is the second collection of songs and signing by Gaia; the first was Sing n' Sign for Fun. These songs are messages of tolerance, confidence, friendship and the importance of reading. The upbeat music will make youngsters want to dance. Gaia's voice is a pleasant soprano, and the lyrics are fun. In "I Love to Sign," the reasons for knowing sign range from being quiet in a library to using sign with speakers of other languages who also know sign. A children's chorus sings along in the songs on the second side. This will be a popular addition to both music and sign language collections.
