Editorial Reviews

Her 4th release.Top 5 in Sweden as of Feb 2002. Says her web site: 'Sophie still writes songs the way that only she can write them. On this CD she has paid more attention to detail. Lars Halapi has also rearranged her sound slightly - the rhythm section is more central and the silence, the pauses and breaks, have become important instruments for turning experience into musical expression. ' If you like Jewel or Cowboy Junkies, or any melodic pop & classic singer songwriters, you'll love Sophie.

I'm sure you will fall in love with her folk rock ballads/ mid tempo songs and her innocent voice.

Many of the subtleties are easy to miss, and even reading the lyrics as the music plays can be quite helpful in getting the full impact from each song.

I am a huge fan of Sophie Zelmani, and I must say that I am not dissappointed in this release at all!!

If you listen to Suzanne Vega and /or Jewel, you have to listen to Sophie Zelmani. I'm sure you will fall in love with her folk rock ballads/ mid tempo songs and her innocent voice. For some people "Sing and Dance" might lack of upbeat tracks. I find this relatively slow pace mesmerising. Her albums have all that classic and timeless feeling.
"How's your heart doing", "Going home", "People", "Moonlight" are perfect examples of the immediate familiar feeling you get when listening to Sophie. I would like to highlight "Once", the beautiful duet with Freddie Wadler, another Swedish singer. The title track is a litle bit more upbeat and country folk. "Yes I am" is an instant sing along.
When I purchased her first album I had never heard about her. I listened to it three times, and since I'm chasing her further releases Wanna bet with me you will soon be singing & dancing with her too?

Say you take a shy and pretty girl in her early twenties and some innocent songs into the hands of a male producer it could easily end up like some of the other "lonely female singer songwriter with a good voice and a guitar". But Sophies fourth album (with Lars Halapi as producer as always) still has more than most, her strong songs has great melodies and the lyrics isn't far behind. Sure it isn't Dylan or Waits but with a voice that is so beautifully close recorded (all her CDs are of audiophile quality) that these songs really makes an impact aswell as a difference from the rest. I am a huge fan of Sophie Zelmani, and I must say that I am not dissappointed in this release at all!! If you enjoy Sophie at all then this disc is a must! Comparable in my opinion to her second album "precious burden", but not quite as dark. Sophie is incredible...cannot wait for number 5!

The secret to Sophie Zelmani's magical pull isn't in the lyrics: I look through them, finding nothing original, nothing that hasn't been sung before. But through Zelmani's honest, sore delivery, the banale words emerge and enter my overloaded brain as if for the first time.

The music itself is absolutely lovely, country-inspired folk pop in minor not too far away from the Cardigans or some of Nick Cave's more savourable efforts, Zelmani's caressing voice accentuating the harp-like accoustic guitar with twanging echoes from the country electric strings, a hint of the gentler side of Johnny Cash?. The simple formula works, committing the tunes to my forehead, even though I am tired of the word "heart" being used for anything other than the lump of muscle tissue shooting hemoglobin through vessels.

Precisely the song with "heart" in the title turned out to be one of my favorites: "How's your heart doing".... I mean, come on. How can I be affected by "Moments are coming back to me / But closer than they should [...] How is your heart doing? / Just wondering, that's all." But she makes me relate to it. I swear. More than I wanted. The other pearl is "Once", this one anticipatory rather than nostalgic, but sadness is to be anticipated as well as tingling pleasure.

OK, now I'll stop. The whole CD is enjoyable, I recommend it for any situation requiring a dose of beauty and a tinge of pain and regret.
