5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Lordy! What an awsome band!!!, December 15, 2002
This review is from: Sing Sing Death House (Audio CD)
When it comes to singing your heart out, one voice comes to mind. It's not so feminine, but somehow utterly beautiful. Brody Armstrong, the lead singer of The Distillers is, in my opinion, THE most talented female vocalist right now; possibly of all time. The voice of a punk rock angel, as I refer to her; her brash, heartfelt lyrics will teach you lessons of life you never thought possible. She's been through a lot in her short life; at 22 she can tell you a lot about the world, and she uses her pure but harshly gorgeous voice to tell you. She is punk rock; its past, and seemingly, its future. I bought this album after hearing 'Young Crazed Peeling' and found out that every single track is just as great. Every song is backed with raw, genuine experiences and emotion. Each song is intense and even inspiring.' `I Am a Revenant', 'Sick of it all', 'I Understand', 'Lordy, Lordy' and of course 'Young Crazed Peeling' are some of my very most favorites. The intense hardcore lyrics and the deep sound penetrate your emotions and just really do something to you. The hit 'City of Angels' is also on this CD and is great track, full of wise lyrics and cathartic guitar riffs. When it comes to hardcore, the Distillers got it all. I also recommend their last self-titled debut album. In that CD Brody's vocals are accompanied by former band Distiller Rose. She backs Brody with more feminine hardcore screaming vocals. They harmonized great, but The Distillers prove with `Sing Sing Death House', that while Rose is missed, they can do just fine without her. All in all, this album rocks hard. If you like hardcore punk revival like Rancid, The Casualties, Lars and The Bastards, Agnostic Front, Blitz... Buy the Distillers album... own it, live it, breathe it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sing Sing Death House, April 19, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sing Sing Death House (Audio CD)
Brody Armstrong might be female, but her vocals are some of the angriest I've ever heard. She's one of my favorite vocalists.
Sing Sing Death House is great. It's loud and fast, with brutally honest songs telling about her troubled life - with a vague sense of optimism underneath it all. You have some songs that are chock full of Brody's unintelligable growling (which still are great), such as Sing Sing Death House, Bullet and the Bullseye, Hate Me, and Desperate. Some slower, more melodic numbers, such as The Young Crazed Peeling, City of Angels, and Lordy Lordy, and stuff that falls in between, such as I am A Reverant and Sick of It All.
The highlight of the album, IMHO, is The Young Crazed Peeling. A wonderful song that should appeal to even non-punk fans, with great lyrics (I love a man from California, he's the prettiest thing we got the same disorder). I'm also quite fond of City of Angels, Sing Sing Death House, and I am a Reverant...they're all great. Get this if you like loud, fast, angry punk rock (this ain't pop-punk) that also happens to have a great female vocalist.

On The Distillers' second album, they perfected their hardcore punk sound. The combination of Brody Dalle's raspy, guttural voice, Ryan Sinn's breakneck bass lines, and Andy Granelli's rapid drumming form the perfection that is attained by this album.

The first track, 'Sick Of It All', throws you into a violent wave of punk rock bliss. "I'm a silent star on a B-roll; I'm a mirror ****in' image of no control!" Brody sings in a harsh but alluring voice. This is the best song of the entire album and gives it a hell of a start. On the next song, 'I Am A Revenant' the guitar wails while Brody screams beautifully. 'Seneca Falls' is paying tribute to the early women's rights activists, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. 'The Young Crazed Peeling' is an upbeat autobiographical song about Brody. 'Sing Sing Death House' & 'Bullet & The Bullseye' are short, to-the-point, blistering punk songs. Then comes 'City Of Angels', a catchy, rockin' tribute to Los Angeles. 'Young Girls' is perhaps the most serious song on the album, pertaining to her best friend who was abused when they where children. The rest of the album is composed of more fast, in your face, mosh 'til ya drop songs finishing off with 'Lordy Lordy', another upbeat, catchy song.

In short, the Distillers second effort is more powerful than a kick to the testes by a pair of steel-toed Dr. Martens.
