5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Lordy! What an awsome band!!!
When it comes to singing your heart out, one voice comes to mind. It's not so feminine, but somehow utterly beautiful. 3.0 out of 5 stars The same formula with a twist
The music that the Distillers create is essentially the same sound that all punk bands (and by punk bands I mean stuff like Rancid and the bands that stemmed off or were inspired by bands like Rancid, the ones that pride themselves on being punk) are setting out to make. This is a good sound, I like this sound, and I could listen to 100 CDs that sounded like...

When it comes to singing your heart out, one voice comes to mind. It's not so feminine, but somehow utterly beautiful. Brody Armstrong, the lead singer of The Distillers is, in my opinion, THE most talented female vocalist right now; possibly of all time. The voice of a punk rock angel, as I refer to her; her brash, heartfelt lyrics will teach you lessons of life you never thought possible. She's been through a lot in her short life; at 22 she can tell you a lot about the world, and she uses her pure but harshly gorgeous voice to tell you. She is punk rock; its past, and seemingly, its future. I bought this album after hearing 'Young Crazed Peeling' and found out that every single track is just as great. Every song is backed with raw, genuine experiences and emotion. Each song is intense and even inspiring.' `I Am a Revenant', 'Sick of it all', 'I Understand', 'Lordy, Lordy' and of course 'Young Crazed Peeling' are some of my very most favorites. The intense hardcore lyrics and the deep sound penetrate your emotions and just really do something to you. The hit 'City of Angels' is also on this CD and is great track, full of wise lyrics and cathartic guitar riffs. When it comes to hardcore, the Distillers got it all. I also recommend their last self-titled debut album. In that CD Brody's vocals are accompanied by former band Distiller Rose. She backs Brody with more feminine hardcore screaming vocals. They harmonized great, but The Distillers prove with `Sing Sing Death House', that while Rose is missed, they can do just fine without her. All in all, this album rocks hard. If you like hardcore punk revival like Rancid, The Casualties, Lars and The Bastards, Agnostic Front, Blitz... Buy the Distillers album... own it, live it, breathe it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sing Sing Death House, April 19, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sing Sing Death House (Audio CD)
Brody Armstrong might be female, but her vocals are some of the angriest I've ever heard. She's one of my favorite vocalists.
Sing Sing Death House is great. It's loud and fast, with brutally honest songs telling about her troubled life - with a vague sense of optimism underneath it all. You have some songs that are chock full of Brody's unintelligable growling (which still are great), such as Sing Sing Death House, Bullet and the Bullseye, Hate Me, and Desperate. Some slower, more melodic numbers, such as The Young Crazed Peeling, City of Angels, and Lordy Lordy, and stuff that falls in between, such as I am A Reverant and Sick of It All.
The highlight of the album, IMHO, is The Young Crazed Peeling. A wonderful song that should appeal to even non-punk fans, with great lyrics (I love a man from California, he's the prettiest thing we got the same disorder). I'm also quite fond of City of Angels, Sing Sing Death House, and I am a Reverant...they're all great. Get this if you like loud, fast, angry punk rock (this ain't pop-punk) that also happens to have a great female vocalist.

On The Distillers' second album, they perfected their hardcore punk sound. The combination of Brody Dalle's raspy, guttural voice, Ryan Sinn's breakneck bass lines, and Andy Granelli's rapid drumming form the perfection that is attained by this album.

The first track, 'Sick Of It All', throws you into a violent wave of punk rock bliss. "I'm a silent star on a B-roll; I'm a mirror ****in' image of no control!" Brody sings in a harsh but alluring voice. This is the best song of the entire album and gives it a hell of a start. On the next song, 'I Am A Revenant' the guitar wails while Brody screams beautifully. 'Seneca Falls' is paying tribute to the early women's rights activists, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. 'The Young Crazed Peeling' is an upbeat autobiographical song about Brody. 'Sing Sing Death House' & 'Bullet & The Bullseye' are short, to-the-point, blistering punk songs. Then comes 'City Of Angels', a catchy, rockin' tribute to Los Angeles. 'Young Girls' is perhaps the most serious song on the album, pertaining to her best friend who was abused when they where children. The rest of the album is composed of more fast, in your face, mosh 'til ya drop songs finishing off with 'Lordy Lordy', another upbeat, catchy song.

In short, the Distillers second effort is more powerful than a kick to the testes by a pair of steel-toed Dr. Martens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a punk band that truly embodies the punk movement, November 3, 2002
By
This review is from: Sing Sing Death House (Audio CD)
I have been a big punk fan back when I was in high school in early nineties. I listened to Fugazi, The Rollins Band, Social Distortion, Blondie, The Clash, and The Ramones. Unfortunately as time went on, I grew disenchanted with punk's holier-than-thou attitude and I moved on to bigger and better things. Now I am disgusted to what is being passed off as "punk" like that ... from Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, and Blink-182. Back in the day, my favorite bands didn't cater to MTV and its fickle audience. Now look at what "punk" has become, another TRL staple. UGH! Thankfully I finally found a band that has all the raw energy and attitude of the bands that I love while having made a music video, and that band is The Distillers. I absolutely fell in love with their new song "City of Angels". It is catchy as heck yet the song manages to have this energy and raw, unpolished sound that I haven't heard in years. Brody Armstrong, the wife of Rancid's Tim Armstrong, had to have been listening to a lot of her husband's music as well as early Hole. Her raw, unpolished vocals reminds me a lot like Courtney Love before she cleaned up and sold out. "Sing Sing Death House" is a barely 30 minute collection of infectious yet fast music that would make The Clash and Rancid both proud. Garage music at its finest. After hearing "Sing Sing Death House", I may just have hope for a movement that has now been tainted with whiny brats and pop music with guitars.

4.0 out of 5 stars I lick the salt from my wounds and run into the night..., February 6, 2003

Upon hearing my first Distillers song (Oh Serena, from their self-titled album), I decided that I had to learn more about this awesome band. After seeing them live, I knew I had to buy the cd... And let me tell you, I'm glad I did!

As with any album, there are tracks that stand out and tracks that aren't so great. The first track, Sick Of It All, is a great introduction into the album. It slowly builds you up, and as soon as Brody starts singing, you're ready to find a crowd to mosh in. The second song, I Am A Revenant, is my favorite song on the album. I just feel I can relate to the lyrics. Seneca Falls is definitely not one of the best songs on the album, in my opinion. The fourth track, The Young Crazed Peeling, is the second Distillers song I heard, so it will always appeal to me. It's a bit slower, but definitely has not lost any feeling. Sing Sing Death House, the album's title track, is an alright song... I don't enjoy it all that much, but I'll still listen to it. The sixth track, Bullet & The Bullseye, has a great beginning - always reminds me of seeing them live. It's a nice change to hear another band member singing - erm...I meant screaming. City of Angels, either the first or second release from this album, is an alright song. As with The Young Crazed Peeling, this song is slower, but has not lost any emotion. Ditto for Young Girl, track eight. Hate Me is an awesome track - Brody screams for all she's worth. Good to see a girl who isn't afraid to scream! My only complaint is that this song is so short. At just over a minute long, the adrenaline she gives off is simply a pinch on the arm instead of a full-out pummeling. Desperate is an alright song - I sometimes skip it, I sometimes listen to it. Track eleven, I Understand, has an awesome opening line - "Hey double bubble, can I give you a ride?" followed by an awesome scream. The first line just makes me laugh - don't know why. The song has good lyrics, but I'm not particularly fond of the way it sounds. Lordy Lordy, the last track on the cd, is definitely the song I like the least. It's too slow for my taste, and it has this...I don't know how to explain it, but it just doesn't feel punk to me. It has good lyrics, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

All in all, this is an incredible cd. As I stated before, it has its great tracks and its bad ones, but it is one of my favorite cds. It's great to see a female on the music scene (..., who can actually sing and play an instrument, and isn't singing some bubblegum pop ...). Brody has a great voice and she knows how to use it. However, be warned that she does, on some tracks, sound like a man. Many of my friends refer to her as "he". (Sorry, Brody!) That aside, she's still amazing at what she does.

If you like Rancid, you'll probably like The Distillers, simply because you can hear how Tim and Brody both have similar styles. I won't be a sheep and tell you to get your ... down to your local music place and buy this cd - that's your own decision. All I'm saying is you're missing out if you don't buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great modern punk album!, January 23, 2006
By
This review is from: Sing Sing Death House (Audio CD)
I'm not usually the biggest fan of modern punk -- most of the punk cds in my collection are from the late 70's and early 80's -- but I absolutely love this album. The Distillers are loud and angry, but are very capable of writing catchy songs. Brody's a fantastic frontwoman for this band, with her gritty voice and really solid lyricism. I saw the Distillers play a few years ago at Lollapalooza, and they play hard, too! Every song is good on the CD, but my favorites are "That Crazed Young Peeling" and "City of Angels".

From the moment i put it in my cd player its never been further from the pile and i doubt its ever been in the box. One of my freinds told me to listen to The Distillers and ever since ive been jammin along with them, he thinks Brody's sexy and frankly so do I. Sing sing death house has everything a punk album needs, all the power and energy of the guitars and Brody's voice makes it complete. It's been in my mums car for months and she says she hates it but it's still in there, if my frank sinatra loving mother can like it anybody can. Anybody who is into good music should try it, even if you do like power-pop, this is nothing like it, you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best of the three, August 13, 2004

I love this album. For anyone who knows anything about Brody (and even for some who don't), you can really tell the way in which this is a slice of her life. Brody Dalle may have stopped taking hits, but this CD is just as gritty and heroine-soaked as their debut album. Songs on the album chronicle everything, from the sexual abuse of her childhood friend in "Young Girls", to the symptons of withdrawal in "I Understand". The best songs on the album are without a doubt, "I Am A Revenant" and "The Young Crazed Peeling"(an amazing autobiographical song marked with reverance for her inner circle and the reassuring line "the way you feel, its okay. Its never gonna change anyway."). This is the best of the three Distillers CDs and it's not really fair to compare Brody to any other punk female vocalist, because she truly has something all her own.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sing Sing Death House (Audio CD)
The Distillers are one of the most euphonic Punk Rock Bands. Their lyrics especially for sing sing deathouse are pure genus with true passion, anger, joy and some sarcasm they have what it takes. Of the new punk rock bands working today they are masters at their profession. Sing,Sing Death House is One of their three Master Pieces most likely the best. If you buy any of their Cds get this one but don't leave the other two behind they aswell shine with immense passion in modern rock. Buy this Cd is a classic.

My favorite Song would have to be The City of Angels. As a citizen of Los Angeles and fellow artist they truely descibe life on the edge in Los Angeles. If you like hardcore punk buy this cd now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
