Product Description

Why settle for one great female vocalist when you can get three, especially when they're stylish soul diva Irma Thomas, Tracy "Mother Earth" Nelson, and swamp rocker (and roller) Marcia Ball. The talented trio take the Sing It! title seriously, belting all hues of blues with satisfying sass and sincerity. Backed by a fine and funky band of Memphis-soul stalwarts and New Orleans session stars, the ladies shine both individually and as a team. Thomas, the longtime "Soul Queen of New Orleans," struts her stuff on the Bobby "Blue" Bland classic "Yield Not to Temptation," while Ball puts some patented bayou boogie, powered by her slinky piano lines, into her spotlight songs. Nelson repeatedly stops the show with her enormous, wraparound voice, transforming tunes like "In Tears" from simple country-flavored ballads into cathartic emotional experiences. But it's the combined voices that makes the session so special, and the title track, a soulfully scintillating second-line anthem, is the most enjoyable example of the vocal virtuosity of these women. It's a quintessential New Orleans celebration of singing, well worth the purchase price by itself, and it, like the entire album, also serves as an excellent sampler of the multiple talents of the superb song stylists involved. --Michael Point

We've loved Irma & Marcia for a long time, but I'd forgotten how great Tracy Nelson is.

Great piano riffs by Marcia Ball, and amazing vocal harmonies from all three ladies.

I actually heard these ladies first on Austin City Limits and decided that I needed the CD. Friends take one listen to this CD and fall in love with it just as I did. They like it so much that I am eager to let them take it home. I have bought FOUR copies and sent TWO as gifts. And I don't even have a copy for my own right now. My female friends have shared with me that this CD is highly suitable for listening while taking a candle-lite bath to soak away those "man-trouble" blues and also while trying to shake the road-rage syndrome on the ride home from work (of which I agree). BUY IT. And share it with a friend.

I can understand the sentiment expressed by at least one of the previous reviewers that, despite the considerable appeal of this collaboration, the three remarkable singers behind it had all done better solo work before--and since. That's probably arguable, but I admit I'm kind of "solo oriented" myself. There's nothing quite like exploring the work of an individual performer at some depth. Of course, since I HAVE so much of the solo work by Nelson, Thomas and Ball, I don't personally feel deprived, and this collaboration is a certainly a welcome and kind of special treat. But I do appreciate that reviewer's frustration to a degree. Why is it that this one collaborative effort--good as it is--garnered these talented artists considerably more attention than almost anyof their solo projects? It even got them an all-too-rare Grammy nod back in 1999.

But shouldn't these three great singers be getting Grammy nominations left, right and center?

That's something of a rhetorical question. Such is the way of the world--or at least the way of the "biz." Joint projects like this are "event" albums by definition. And even superstars like Crosby, Stills and Nash got more attention as a group than they ever did for any of their solo works. (I'm deliberately leaving Neil Young out of that equation, cuz I'm not so sure that's true in his case.)

So ultimately, it's best to consider SING IT! on its own terms--and if you do you'll find it's is a fine (and fun) collaborative work. Each singer is offered a chance to do a bit of what she does best. Irma Thomas, for instance, delivers some of her patented good timey N'Awlins soul ("People Will Be People," "Woman on the Move) but also joins Tracy Nelson for a full-throated, powerhouse closer, "You Don't Know Nothin' About Love.

Right before leaving Chicago on the train this past summer, we bopped into a store and purchased a new CD for the ride home on the train. The woman behind the counter recommended SING IT! We are glad she did...and sorry we didn't buy 2 CDs as we fought over who got to listen to it for the next 7 hours home! The blend of 3 wonderful voices and the rhythm of the train made for a great trip! Seems these women only get better every year!!!! BUY IT (even if you aren't taking a train trip!)

Anything with Tracy Nelson on it is bound to be great and this collaboration with two other wonderful singers is as good as it gets. The funky Memphis sounds are a perfect vehicle for these three strong female voices and to hear Tracy and Marcia Ball wail with Irma Thomas, one of their mentors, is a treat. This CD should be a best seller. All the love and pain these women have shared comes through on every note. check it out. they deserve to be heard.

I was not aware of this CD until I witnessed the live event. The CD is a remarkable reminder of just how good live music is.I have been a BIG fan of Tracy since the Mother Earth Days and now have added not only this CD but a couple of Marcia and Irma's as well Don't let another day go by without one.

i frequently leave music on in the house while i'm milling around trying to fool myself into thinking that i'm busy. with no good new york stations on the radio, i do one of two things: the tv on the music channel (usually blues) or aol stream on the computer (usually folk). at times, a song will get my attention, and i check who it is. well folks, on this particular day, ''sing it'' came on and grabbed me as if my sixth grade teacher (who shall remain nameless) pulled me once again by my earlobe (damn you, ms crowley). what a combination of songstresses. i hadn't heard from tracy nelson since she was with mother earth. marcia ball is great. irma thomas's gift speaks for itself. this was my second purchase of said cd--i'm starting to send them as gifts.
below it says to tag the product. i have no idea what that means since, at 64, i'm new to using a computer without adult supervision. if it means we're going to play tag then ''not it.''

I didnt know who Marcia Ball was until I saw her perform live at a Blind Willie McTell festival ( in a cow pasture, no less ) up near Augusta GA. About five years ago. I stood right in front of the stage and was literally mesmerized by her fine cajun style piano playing, her strong, vibrant vocals and her commanding stage presence. I bought the CD at the festival and have loved it ever since. It's a little bit motown, a little bit blues and gospel and a whole lotta soul. You cant help but smile and feel good while listening to this CD, and if your feet dont start to move you better check your pulse because you're probably not breathing. I give this my strongest reccomendation !!!
