2.0 out of 5 stars Save your money, get the other book!
I really enjoyed Roger Love's book, "Set Your Voice Free", it honestly helped me overcome the weaknesses in my singing voice, particularly with the 'break'. So when this book came out, I though I absolutely HAVE to have it, if it's anything like "Set Your Voice Free", it must be wonderful. Well, I'm sorry to say it is a disppointment. It really won't help you improve...

This is the second book authored by Roger Love on vocal technique. This book is marketed for a younger audience and focuses entirely on singing voice while his other book, Set Your Voice Free focuses on speaking and singing. Regarding instructional advice, there is little new information in this book and the vocal exercises (called daily Warm ups in this book) are identical... So if you already own Set Your Voice Free!, you already have the most important element in Roger Love's self-training material, the One-Octave, Octave-and a half step and Octave Jump exercises. These are presented as seperate tracks on Set Your Voice free, but are rolled into one 20 minute track for Sing Like The Stars. They are very powerful excerises that produce results if practiced daily. What's added to Sing Like The Stars! is more focus on vibrato and Falesetto (only briefly mentioned in Set Your Voice Free), lots of tips from celebs (most of them common-knowledge), and many more entertaining stories about Rogers work with stars we all know. Also, Roger Love takes apart three chart topping songs and breaks them down using a notation system he calls Love Notes. What's missing here (compared to Set Your Voice Free) is most of the self-analysis: the nasel sound, the gravel voice, the brassy voice, etc... Set Your Voice gives you a lot of tools to help target problems, sing like the stars doesn't put much focuse there. Roge Love's techniques are pretty amazing, so I understand why he would want to come out with something a bit more youth focused. Even many adults may find Sing Like The Stars! to be more for them.... but I would recommned Set Your Voice Free because of the added information about speaking voice and Roger makes a good case for how the two are related.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent vocal exercises, excellent book, June 18, 2004

This book is a must-have if you sing or want to learn how to sing. I practice with the vocal exercise cd every day in my car. The cd is included in the back of the book. Using Roger Love's "female vocal exercise" on track 22 has made me a great singer with a great range. I can hit notes now that I could never have hit without doing these exercises.

The warm-ups (there are both female and male exercises) are easy to do and you get great results if you practice with them. I buy this book for my friends who are interested in learning to sing better.

This book is such a low price for what you are getting when you buy it. Not only do you get an easy to read book which shows you how to sing and perform but you also get a cd with vocal exercises that will turn you into a great singer. The cd is like having a voice lesson whenever you want it, without paying over and over again. The value is incredible.

This book is excellent and came with a CD to practice with. It has addressed all the problems that I have with lots of good exercises to make or assist you in changing your voice. Contains help with breathing, vibrato, explains and demonstrations for chest, middle and head voice and more. The CD also contains a warm-up. It has exercises for both male and female voices.

4.0 out of 5 stars Upgrade your Roger Love, May 30, 2007

"Sing like the Stars" is as light version of Set Your Voice Free: How To Get The Singing Or Speaking Voice You Want. I enjoyed Stars as it is fun, and the exercises really do help, though I would suggest getting his "Set Your Voice Free" as it has more depth. One nice thing that Love does with Stars is he shows you how to get more expression out of a song with a few included tracks. Both books include a CD with vocal exercises. Stars includes a condensed selection of Free's exercises plus the song tracks. If you already have Free then pickup Stars. Be careful though as Love's products are addictive.

It really won't help you improve your voice, now if you are between the ages of 12 and 18 and love going to karaoke, or if you have only sung in the shower, then this book is for you. No professional or semi-professional should ever aspire to sing exactly like another star, that's absolutely dreadful!

I don't know how the other reviewers would rate this so highly....teenagers, perhaps? As for Jaime Vendera, the glass-breaking maestro, I bet you he didn't even read this book and he gave it 5-stars. It's just a matter of 'scratch my back and I'll scratch yours'.

If you are serious about improving your voice, this book is NOT for you. Buy the other one, If, however, you just want to have fun at the karaoke bar and have money to spare, then go ahead and buy this book. Happy warbling!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Jaime Vendera, Author of Raise Your Voice", December 18, 2005
This review is from: Sing Like the Stars (Paperback)
Author Roger Love has been a voice coach for over 20 years. Starting his professional vocal coaching career at just 16, he has had the pleasure of working with top selling artists such as; The Beach Boys, The Jacksons, Def Leppard, Matchbox 20, Lisa Marie Presley, Motley Crue, Chicago, Mandy Moore, Wilson-Phillips, and many more. He has often been called the vocal coach to the stars. He is also a speaking coach; teaching professional speakers such as John Gray (Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus), and Anthony Robbins.

Roger Love's book, SING LIKE THE STARS, is a 145-page vocal instruction book filled with several illustrations. SING LIKE THE STARS covers a wide variety of vocal topics, including diaphragmatic breathing, vocal anatomy, proper diet, overcoming stage fright, and a 10 step singing system designed to drastically improve your singing voice. The book is heavily laden with professional performance tips from singers such as, Christina Aguilera, Luther Vandross, Brian Mcknight, Cher, and others. Roger uses a no-nonsense approach to vocal instruction and explains an easy way to reach your higher register without straining, by using waht is referred to as your "middle voice".

Anyone who reads this book is almost guaranteed to improve his or her singing voice in no time flat! There has been many books written on the art of singing and proper vocal technique, but none approach voice with such an easy to understand format.

Roger has also developed a program called Love Notes; a perfected song dissecting system, which makes it easier to understand and sing the songs that you have always wanted to sing, but were too afraid to try.

As a bonus to the book, Roger Love has added a warm-up CD featuring the same exact exercises he teaches to all of his professional clients. The CD contains several audio examples for vocal instruction and a complete vocal warm-up for both male and female singers. I have personally tried the vocal warm-up CD for over a month. It is a quick, effortless routine that will loosen up your vocal cords and prepare your voice for hours of singing. Whether you have never had any prior vocal instruction, never used a warm-up before you sing, or are already a seasoned professional, you should definitely try Roger's method.

Singing is very physical. If you wish to have a long vocal career and want to keep your voice in shape, then you must warm up your voice before every performance. This is just like stretching out before running a race. I give SING LIKE THE STARS, and Roger's vocal warm-up an A+. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for any aspiring vocalist.

This is a great book on basic singing techniques. This short book and CD very simply teaches you the basics of singing. The basics are breathing properly, practicing, diet, voice care, and performance. The CD gives you exercises that build your basic technique, and explanations on how to find your voice. There is content for tenor voice training. It is NOT a book for just sopranos. I'm not a great singer, but I have improved as a result of using these basic vocal exercises, and vocal warm-ups. You can't do much better for a basic book on singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for beginning vocalists, October 11, 2008
This review is from: Sing Like the Stars (Paperback)
This is a very good book for someone with limited knowledge of how the voice works. The cd that comes along with the book is excellent and contains two easy to follow 20min warm up routines. The information in the book is easy to understand though very sugar coated and doesn't give the whole story. All of the "star" comments are useless and just take up space but all in all it's worth reading and the disc is great.
