Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Short on surprises and long on clich?s, this debut tale of the You're the One series features model-quality teen boys' pictures on the covers. The narrator of this budding romance is 14-year-old B.Z., an aspiring guitarist and songwriter whose next-door neighbors, the Hanson-esque McKenzie brothers, become overnight rock sensations. Zak, the youngest, is B.Z.'s longtime best-friend-turned-boyfriend. But as she watches the group perform on TV, the girl becomes mesmerized by the oldest brother, James: "It was as if I was seeing him for the first time. His thick, dark hair, his dark eyes, and his tall, slender body swaying with the beat . The sounds he was coaxing from his guitar were just incredible." That's a word that may well pop into readers minds as they witness the growing attraction between B.Z. and James who, unlike flirtatious publicity-hound Zak, is not thrilled about his new rock-star status. It's bliss when their lips finally meet, in James's dressing room, just minutes before the brothers take to the stage at the Teen Music Awards: "The room was spinning and my whole body was alive with happiness," confides the lovestruck teen. Sappy it is, but fans of heartthrob tales may well gobble this up like chocolate. Ages 9-12. (Jan.)

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-A mediocre love story. Fourteen-year-old Bethany Zimbalist is confused. Her next door neighbors, the McKenzie brothers, have hit the big time. Before their band, Boyzlife, left for their summer tour, B. Z. and the middle brother, Zak, had begun a budding romance. After the tour, though, things seem to have changed. Zak has become unbearable with his newfound fame, and B. Z. feels herself drawn to James, his sullen, "serious musician" older brother. What to do? This first book in the series has a predictable plot with no interesting twists: basically, mousey-girl-gets-glam-guy. Characters are one-dimensional and poorly developed. The romance is lightweight, with a minimal amount of hand holding or smooching. An over-the-top ending is improbable even by romance-novel standards. Readers are likely to find the "Sweet Dreams" series (Bantam) more enjoyable.

Do you have a crush on a male singer or a band? Then this book is what you need to read. B.Z. has this major crush on zak who is a real butthead(thats what i think) she does untill she chats with James who is older then her. she has fellings for him but he gets mad at her all the time that is untill the night where zak and his brothers go to the "Teen Musice Awards." i better stop right now
