3.0 out of 5 stars Good premise, lacks depth., June 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sing to Me, Saigon (Paperback)
The essential flaw of the story is that it was perhap intended to be too perfect and romantic a romance novel. The premise of war-torn Vietnam is a rich setting for wonderful drama, and the author does indeed try to capitalize on that. However, her characters lack little development beyong backgrounds that can be described in epithets as "tough black nurse" or "rich daddy's little girl" or "solider from midwest". The personalities are likable however lacks adequate emotional and intellectual depth. The characters, although enjoyable, but rather flat. Overall, although the book offers a glimpse into worn-torn Vietnam, it does not depart from the ordinary happily-ever-after romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars A folksinger, a wife, a nurse ... a friendship formed amidst the heartache of Vietnam, July 1, 2006

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Sing to Me, Saigon (Paperback)
Description from the book back cover:

From vastly different worlds to the turbulence of the Vietnam War, three women's lives will change forever ... Fiery Melantha Benning journeyed from the mean streets of Washington DC to the chaos of Vietnam, and earned the respect she never knew a black woman could command - as a second lieutenant and Army nurse. Pledging to protect her younger brother Curtis from enemy fire, she would learn that personal battles are often the toughest ... Beautiful Chau Thi Lian's attentions were divided - between her liberating USO work on behalf of South Vietnam's warriors, and her husband, whose domineering ways ruled her body and soul. Only she could decide which freedoms were worth fighting for ... Radiant Jennifer Swanson never imagined a place like Vietnam when she was growing up on Boston's privileged North Shore. And the weary troops had never been moved the way they were by her voice, her guitar, her dedication to their cause. But what began as a rebellious adventure soon gave way to the reality of war. She sought comfort in the embrace of a handsome, reticent soldier - but he was afraid to love her, for fear tomorrow would never come ... Three women thrown together into the smoke-haze of battle, into the bustle of exotic Saigon, into the fever of a war without reason. They turned to each other to find a way out, and discovered that in a world of fear and chaos, the only things more precious than life are the bonds of friendship that made it worth living ...
