Judy's best and some that weren't.,

Like Angela Bofill, Judy Mowatt truly has an angel's voice. This CD includes most of her well-known songs and also some LP-only tracks. Inexplicably, Shanachie Records has deleted most of Judy's albums from its catalog (as of this writing, only "Black Woman" and "Only A Woman" remain in print)- as such, this compilation becomes indispensable for both this great artist's fans and for anyone being introduced to her music. I wholeheartedly recommend all of Judy's solo albums but if you can't find them this CD will (to a degree) do.

Judy's proud serenity permeates this seminal reggae work -- I bought it when vinyl, 33-1/2 LPs, were all there was. Women reggae artists are still too rare, especially those who exercises their own voice, a few exceptions -- Tanya Stephens, J.C. Lodge, Marcia Griffiths. Ms Mowatt is not crass, she does not speak of female body parts but encompasses and embraces the spiritual as well as the reality of female existence; speaking to the "brothers" to embrace a humane realm to lift themselves and humanity to higher heights. Listen to her laments and rejoicings. She will carry you through. Judy's voice is pure butter, sugar and guava jelly!
