Biography

Featuring numerous multi-instrumentalists and having earned a strong reputation for their live performances, Milwaukee's Decibully brandishes a wide variety of influences, mixing a rich blend of finely interspersed layers tinged with country-esque flourishes, subtle electronic twinges, and rock undertones.

Formed as a trio in Fall 2001 by William J. Seidel (vocals, guitar, percussion, Rhodes), W.… Read more in Amazon's Decibully Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the magazine reviews..., April 28, 2005
By
This review is from: Sing Out America (Dig) (Audio CD)
Here it is a month and a half after the release date, and still no one has reviewed it? Perhaps this is because most of the reviews in major music magazines have been largely unfavorable. At least 2 of those reviews mentioned a certain similarity between the opening song on this record with "Exit Music (For a Film)" on Radiohead's career-making "OK Computer." They then decided this record was a ripoff and wrote it off. It's a shame. I listened to this record because Decibully is on Polyvinyl, home of Of Montreal. Yes, there are some similarities in the one song, but I had to look for them after reading reviews- I heard this sight unseen, without any previous knowledge. Upon first listen I went straight to the Polyvinyl website and bought a vinyl copy. It's well worth it. There's not a bad song on here, and several are great. The opener, "I'm Gonna Tell You," is powerful and gets your attention. The record flows very well from start to finish, as the songs kind of overlap, which works very well. Two tremendous tracks go back to back in "Notes To Our Leaders" and "Sing Out! Sing Out! Sing Out!" And how often does a rock band try- and succeed- with an a cappella song ("Temptation")? There is also the most single-friendly song, "Penny Look Down," that comes late in the record. I have listened to this record more than any other this year, and is one of 2 records that have been released this year that would be in the running for my top records of 2005 (the other being Red Sparowes' "At the Soundless Dawn"). Do yourself a favor, and take a break from the new New Wave (Kaiser Chiefs/Bravery/Louis XIV/Futureheads/Bloc Party) and pick up a record that is different and satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 'Bullies' Beautiful Record, July 17, 2005
This review is from: Sing Out America (Dig) (Audio CD)
Decibully's second polyvinyl album is definitely strong after a few listens. Though in many peoples' opinions this isn't as strong as the last "City of Festivials", but still it's "Colorful Music"(a mighty fine track) with a variety of interesting instruments(banjo to synthesizers) and Seidal's great voice. It's pretty, connective, and cohesive if you actually listen to it a few times all the way through. It seems like Decibully is trying to attach a message on this record, but I could be wrong. It seems evident in the tunes "Notes to Our Leaders" and "Sing Out!" which round up the first side of the LP and first half of the CD.

Chances are if you liked the first few Decibully releases, you will enjoy this. It seems like the band is a little more out of their shell.

My favorites are "Meg an & Magill", "Rid of Me At Last", the vocal driven "Temptation"(probably my favorite of all of these), "Penny Look Down", and most of the second half. Buy the LP if you can. The bonus tracks on the vinyl aren't as good as the actual album, but the white vinyl is a neat eye sight.
