3.0 out of 5 stars They're Outta The Closet Now!!, November 30, 2005
This review is from: Sing Out: Gays and Lesbians in the Music (Hardcover)
Boze Hadleigh, author of "Hollywood Gays" and Hollywood Lesbians," strikes again with a real scorcher of a book. This time he exposes the secret world of gays & lesbians in the music business! This book is actually an updated version of his earlier work "The Vinyl Closet."
We are not really suprised at the inclusion of such artists as Boy George, Elton John, kd lang, and George Michael - their sexuality has been well-known for years. But there are some MAJOR suprises for many music lovers, myself included.
Among the older stars discussed, I was genuinely amazed to read about Maurice Chevalier, Rudy Vallee, and several other stars of the 1920s and 1930s.
Among the female singers included, it was no secret during their lifetimes that both Marlene Dietrich and Josephine Baker were "switch-hitters" (bisexual).
Perhaps the parts of this book I found the most fascinating were the "anonymous" interviews with two female singers. They were both BIG in the 1970s, and both continue to have active careers today. According to the author, these singers agreed to be interviewed only if their names WERE NOT used in the book.
Olivia Newton-John is easily identified by her interview "The Story of O," in the chapter entitled "Songbirds." Also in this chapter is an interview with Helen Reddy, also easy to identify.
In both of these, the author really goes out of his way to include enough career & personal info on each star, so the reader will know exactly who it is. Kudos to Mr. Hadleigh! The Olivia interview is a real eye-opener, and an added bonus is a short interview with her (now) ex-husband, Matt Lattanzi.
Several other former big-name singers included in the book are David Cassidy, Julie Andrews ("blind" comment) and Johnny Mathis, who actually gave an interview!
In closing, I must say that I truly enjoyed this book. The only flaws are the omission of a bibliography, a number of spelling errors, plus I feel some chapters could have been better organized.

I suppose this is an interesting read for its intended audience..gay men and women looking for celebrity role models. I personally would have liked to have seen more documentation..a bibliography, something other than hearsay to back up the author's claims.

I like the section on my beloved Mathis...the book really couldhave used a bibliography. Otherwise there is a question as to thetruthfullness of some of the author's claims. END
