From the Author

Book 1 of the "Sing Out Loud" 4-book vocal training series for kids, teens and beginning singers!

About the Author

Jaime Vendera is the author of a variety of vocal instruction books, including Raise Your Voice and The Ultimate Breathing Workout and one of the most sought-after vocal coaches on the planet. Using the methods he created, Jaime turned his two-octave range into six octaves with massive decibels of raw vocal power that enabled him to set a world record shattering glass with his voice. When singers need more vocal range, power and projection, or need to build up vocal stamina to perform every night, they call Jaime Vendera. Jaime states that, "None of this would have been possible without God."

Anne Loader McGee has studied with a number of well-known Hollywood singing teachers. She has performed in musical theatre productions and taken classes in songwriting, music, and film at both the American Film Institute and the University of California and Los Angeles (UCLA). She also co-wrote Strengthening Your Singing Voice with Elizabeth Sabine, a voice-strengthening expert whom many famous singers, actors, and speakers have consulted over the last twenty-five years. As an award winning children's writer, Anne has produced plays for young people, developed animation scripts, and had a number of short stories published in magazines, and in the Los Angeles Times. Anne's middle grade novel, The Mystery at Marlatt Manor and Anni's Attic are available worldwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start singing right! May 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a book that I wish was available when I started singing ten years ago as a teenager. Anyone can benefit from reading it, even though it's written for younger singers.

It takes you through all the basics of understanding your vocal instrument.
You will learn how the vocal cords produce sound, and breathe properly through several breathing exercises.
You also get to learn about amplifying your voice/producing resonance without hurting your voice by singing too loudly or straining.
Then there are several exercises that you need to do everyday to start learning how to operate your voice.
All of these exercises are so simple, but they can get crazy sounding. But they are the best part of the book. I have so much fun doing them. (and my dog always joins in by howling)
A few examples would be monkeys, kittens, howling wolf, and barking dog. But there are a lot more.
There are a few more things like learning what the vocal break is and beginning vibrato exercises.

If you're a young singer you will love this book. There is so much to learn about the voice and this book is a great place to begin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner. January 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My son sings but doesn't really know HOW to sing. This book is helping fill in the blanks. There's more to it than just belting it out naturally. He's pretty much to the limit of what he can do on his own and this is a great next step. Since he's seen the author on TV he is far more credible than some guy up the road who gives vocal lessons.

I've been around singers for forever, it seems, and a lot of this stuff is very familiar. Where the book is really strong is laying it out in a sensible and usable order.

I'm also working through it but kind of feel like a dork doing the exercises in the car during my commute. It is working. I still sound horrible but I'm gaining control over the horror. So I've got that going for me.

This is full of good info and vocal exercises. I'm not a teenager, but still find the exercises helpful for learning about the voice and getting it in shape.

Right from the outset you will see this book is aimed at a younger audience of teenagers/kids who have little vocal experience and confidence.
I have many vocal books by various authors and i find this one to be the best possible introduction for kids and teenagers who want to sing. The chapters are short and too the point and it has plenty of "assignments" to be done that ensure vocal progress is made.

Having said this adults and older singers who want a book that explains areas of vocal technique without the jargon and fluff, this is a great starting book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sings like teen spirit April 24, 2013
Format:Paperback
As a youth worker I get the benefit of teaching music to a wide variety of teenagers and young adults, which although challenging at times is usually great fun.
I have adopted the techniques of the "Sing Out Loud" book over the last couple of months and my group of 15 youngsters (boys and girls aged from 11 - 19) have absolutely, totally embraced the methods contained within. I have used the book as a Religious Instruction teacher would use the bible at Church class. We have run through the techniques and exercises weekly with relative ease (or as much ease as it can be with a rowdy bunch of kids yeah?). Of course I have tested the kids to make sure they did their homework! HAHAHA!
The results are astonishing. Although our equipment is not the best we now have 3 really great bands within our youth group (1 r&b accapella, 1 rock, and 1 pop). The easy to comprehend nature of the authors have made the kids understand how, with a little discipline great things can be achieved.
You learn how to understand how your voice works, how to breathe correctly, how to amplify that sound. There are simple exercises to get you started, and harder exercises for when you're little more cocky (like all teenagers are ha!)
The important thing, which makes this book appealing to the younger generation is that the exercise are easy, fun, and some are hilarious sounding.
This book is well written, for all ages not just young adults and builds a thorough, comprehensive platform of the fundamental elements of singing.
Whatever your age this book puts the FUN into FUNDAMENTAL and the SING into SINGING.
