best kids' music,
By Chaoticmuse (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews

I can't recommend this album highly enough. I loved it as a kid in the 70s, my kids love it (we have it on LP record), and it's about time it got reissued on CD. It's more Simon and Garfunkel than the rather insipid Peter Paul and Mary, and is certainly more sophisticated than a lot of what passes for children's entertainment. You'll want to save it for your grandchildren too. ;) A timeless classic that can't be beat.

A Deathless Classic,
By Judith M. M. Buck-Glenn "The Rev. Judy Buck-G... (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)

This album is one of the most wonderful children's albums ever made. I listened to it many, many times in the 1970's, and shared it with my daughter, who loved it then as well. Elegant, gorgeous, accomplished, it will elevate the musical and lyrical taste and appreciation of any child exposed to it. Their version of William Blake's poem "Little Lamb" is a tiny magical jewel. And their voices blend so beautifully. It is a simply thrilling experience to listen to Lucy and Carly Simon sing together.

I have had this record since I was a young child. I lost it in a move in 2001 and was able to find the record again on ebay in 2006. What a nice surprise to have it now on CD. Sound quality is great and now I can save it onto my computer so I never lose it again. Every child should have access to this wonderfully vibrant and diverse mix of songs, prose, and poems; it is one of the few things left to help kids hold on to their innocence and appreciate music from times long past.

This was originally released in the 1970's, then fell out of the catalog for many years. It has been re-released in 2008. It is rare among albums for children in that it is genuinely 'musical'. The voices are lovely. The arrangements are suitably complex. The songs appeal to all ages. There is neither condescension to kids, nor an attitude of 'it's good for them'. It is joyful and fun. Kids love the songs.

Glad they brought this back,

This is a lovely, refined sounding album. It could easily be mistaken for some high-toned classical collection. "Who Has Seen the Wind" has a spooky, ethereal feel, eerie and beautiful, "The Lamplighter" has a jaunty, Christmas-carol mood, and "A Pavane For The Nursery" is just about one of the most moving things I've ever heard. And I think that parents may enjoy it more than their children! It's not the bouncy, wacky, show-tune sort of children's music that you might be expecting, so by all means, listen to the samples first to ascertain whether your child might like it. I love this album, both for the classic children's poetry and the gorgeous voices. I'm glad this was reissued on CD. I gave my 1970's-issue LP copy to friends, not realizing that it was out of print and would be hard to replace.

this recording was the most beautiful and memorable album that our children had. Glad it is on CD I quickly bought 2 copies for grandchildren, but does anyone have access to the wonderfully illustrated book that came with the album. My kids are in their 40's and still sing everyline of lobster quadrille and others. If so, please let me know @maryks39@yahoo.com

I grew up listening to the vinyl version of this album. I love, love The Owl and the Pussycat. Such a wonderful alternative to the usual stuff that kids are bombarded with these days. We listen to this when we go on road trips or if we just want to have some silly dance time in the livingroom. The songs are lyrical and are not 'dumbed down' for children. Where else can a child learn about a 'runcible spoon'? The beauty of the sisters' voices blend in a wonderful way. Beautiful, simple music combined with beautiful poetry. Can't really find this quality of kid's music anymore.

After more than 40 years... these songs, this album are still wonderfully relevant. I had this record album (still have it, in fact) and listened to these songs as a child over and over. My record player broke and I was planning to have the songs transfered to a digital format. But now I don't have to and the music on my new CD sounds great! In a time where a lot of Children's music seems to be annoying, repetitive and poorly arranged with lame lyrics, this album of beautifully arranged poetry is a welcome contrast. I'm so happy to be able to share them with my son. Now he gets to hear the recorded versions of the songs I've been singing to him since birth. Truly a treasure!

Was looking unsuccessfully for baby present, when I saw this delightful collection from decades ago. It is just as charming as ever. Two cautions, the tunes will stick in your mind - over and over and over - and the songs are more Christian than I remembered. If that is ok, this is a quality addition to child's music library that adults will enjoy also.
