Colorful, creative, enjoyable and effective, Sing, Spell, Read & Write Level 1 Program gives your students a roadmap to reading success. The 36-step Language Arts Raceway. To help students get to the finish line moving at their own pace, this multisensory program combines unforgettable sing-along-and-point songs, point-and-learn wall charts, a wealth of hands-on activities and games, plus two curriculum books and Storybook Readers to spark interest and guide comprehension

Sing, Spell, Read & Write is a learning-to-read curriculum that uses a 36-step program of carefully sequenced systematic, explicit phonics instruction to build fluent independent readers. For more than two decades, veteran educator Sue Dickson developed and field-tested this program in her own classroom. Where other reading programs were failing the students who were struggling the most, Mrs. Dickson saw first-hand the amazing results her students achieved when she combined music with multimodal teaching strategies. Using look, listen, point, sing-along, and echo routines along with gross motor and fine motor activities, the program activitely engages the senses and effectively reaches all types of learners. Virtually every child is assured of success. Today, the program has a proven, nationwide track record and the soundness of such an approach is strongly supported by current research on brain function, language acquisition, and reading.

Features • Sing, Spell, Read & Write helps you: • Put the proven power of multisensory learning to work in your classroom. • Develop a complete Language Arts curriculum with correlated and sequenced phonics, reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, and grammar lessons. • Engage students and make learning fun with catchy sing-along songs, games, phonetic storybook readers, and hands-on activities. • Boost Language Arts skills for all students, including those who struggle with traditional approaches. • Promote independent reading by the end of Grade 1 for virtually every child. • Incorporate step-by-step guidelines and scripted lessons into your curriculum. • Track each child's progress using built-in assessments and achievement tests. • Improved reading scores nationwide -- 42 percentile-point increase in total reading scores, 34-point increase in comprehension, increase of 2.7 reading grade levels in one year.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complete Language Arts Program in a Box!, June 25, 2005
By
BethanieB "bethanieb" (Northeast Georgia, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Level 1 Kit (Paperback)
I first started teaching my 4-year-old daughter how to read using "How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." It bored her (literally) to tears. The lessons were redundant, and the text-specific characters confused her (she had already learned all of the letters and their sounds long before). I found the negative psychology advocated by the scripts quite disturbing. The pace was slow and restrictive.

So, following my child's lead, I looked for a new curriculum. We went to the other end of the spectrum, and tried Bob Books and some Scholastic sight word readers for a while, but that just wasn't systematic enough for us to keep at it. DD likes structure, but also needs plenty of variety to keep it interesting.

A friend told us about Sing, Spell, Read, & Write and showed me the materials. I was initially impressed with the workbook activities and the progress chart, as well as the musical portion of the curriculum. (Although the songs are VERY cheesy, they are VERY easy to remember and thus VERY effective.)

Upon getting our own set, I realized my daughter had already outstripped the Kindergarten portion of the curriculum (but that's OK -- we'll use them with daughter #2 in a couple of years), so we started in the Level 1 workbook, eliminating or greatly reducing the amount of writing she had to do (one challenge of working with a young child who is ready to read is that her reading & comprehension can easily outpace her motor skills & writing ability). It's extremely easy to adapt the activities to have her "draw a line" to the correct letters rather than write them in herself.

I am continually impressed with how much fun we have with this curriculum. Each day's work includes songs and games (go-fish & Bingo games that review and reinforce what she's learning), some reading (there is a nice collection of readers and some booklets that they actually fold, staple, and color themselves!, a daily spelling test (around the 2nd month into it), and grammar instruction (on skills like punctuation, alphabetizing, sentence parsing, and syllabication!). There are also periodic assessments that help introduce your child to test-taking skills (including filling in the bubbles). I realize that homeschoolers may not be as concerned with enhancing their kids' ability to take tests, but I like that it's in there, so that when and if she ever *does* have to take a standardized test, she'll be very familiar with the format & procedures. I am *so* impressed with the thoroughness of this curriculum!!

I wouldn't say that this curriculum is for everyone, though. It is very much a pre-packaged program, and doesn't include any "living" books (we read plenty of those on the side, though). The music may just be too much for some parents to take. Some children may find the workbook pages tiresome (but I think they are fairly well-balanced -- 4-10 "problems" per page).

I think the things that I appreciate most about this curriculum are:
<ol><li>Thoroughness -- I really feel like we're covering ALL of the Language Arts bases, including Reading, Spelling, Writing, and Grammar (and Testing!).

<li>Ease of Use -- There are scripts, lists of what materials will be used & what songs will be played, and step-by-step instructions for each lesson, as well as how many days should be allotted for each "step." I can literally sit down with my daughter, glance at the instructor's manual (or not!), and get started. A little pre-planning (like gathering the books & materials you'll need) helps optimize the lesson, but even without extra preparation it's a cinch.

<li>Variety of Activities -- This program is *so* much more than readers and workbook exercises. My child does enjoy the workbook activities. The readers are colorful and substantial (so that she really feels as if she's accomplished something when she finishes one). The music is a wonderful technique for assisting memorization. Even spelling tests and occasional "chalkboard" lessons help mix things up for us!

<li>Fun! -- The games are a wonderful touch. My daughter (like many children around her age, I gather) is extremely into playing games of any kind, so they are a reward in and of themselves!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rolls Royce of phonics curricula, May 17, 2002

This review is from: Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Level 1 Kit (Paperback)
After trying several well known phonics/reading programs with my older two kids when they were in first grade (with lots of frustration), I finally decided to try Sing, Spell, Read, and Write (SSRW) with my third child. Even though I knew about SSRW when my two older kids were in first grade, I didn't want to fork out [money] for it. I thought it was too much money. Looking back now, though, I wish I had. It's a great program!

It is a complete Language Arts program for first grade. By complete, I mean it includes phonics, spelling, reading, grammar, composition, and penmanship.

There is a more child-appeal in this program that I've seen in any other program; in fact, more child appeal than in many other programs put together! The "Raceway" theme is motivating for young learners. The games are fun and the main workbook is colorful.

Level One includes three consumable books (two workbooks and an assessment book), a teacher's manual, 17 phonetic storybooks, games, an audio cd, five audio cassette tapes, and a video.

It's a pretty fast paced program, so don't be afraid to slow it down if necessary. It's designed to finish in one school year, but my son won't finish it until about 1/4 of the way through second grade. I had to slow it down for him because it got hard.

Also, when you are finished with it you can sell it for at least 1/2 of what you paid for it; your buyer will only need to replace the consumable books if your set is otherwise complete.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sing, Spell, Read, and Write, February 18, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sing, Spell, Read and Write : Level 1 Kit (Paperback)
I elected to homeschool my children four years ago. My oldest son, at that time, was eligible for kindergarten. I had determined that if I ever homeschooled my children, I would use Sing, Spell, Read and Write, a phonics-based reading and writing program that I had discovered several years ago. The church that I attended had used the program to help children and adults to learn to read.

My older children, who were in private school, had learned to read using other phonics programs. Yet, I was convinced that Sing, Spell, Read, and Write far exceeded what I had seen of the reading programs in their private school.

Finally, I had a chance to use the program with my oldest son. I was absolutely amazed at his progress. By the end of his kindergarten year, he could read almost on a second-grade level.
Also, the writing portion of the program clearly taught how to draw the alphabet, so as to avoid problems like "b-d" reversal.
Moreover, the use of "catchy tunes" to teach reading principles
made things not only fun, but practical. My son never seemed to forget the principles because they were "muscially-engrained " in his mind.

Now, four years later, I am still amazed at his ability to read and comprehend.

Thanks Sue Dickson for developing such a wonderful program. I am now getting ready to use the program again with my other son who
will be soon entering kindergarten. I'm excited!
