From the supplier: Government authorities in Singapore were taken by surprise by the Western press' interest in the Michael Fay caning issue. Initially they treated foreign correspondents in the same manner they treat reporters from their government-controlled newspapers. They were surprised by foreign correspondents' disinclination to wait for the bureaucratic process. However, when the press constantly reported the easily accessible Fay-family opinions, the authorities realized the need to offer their version of the events.
