I purchased this machine from Walmart but was very skeptical because of the negative reviews I read here. At first I was unable to make a good stitch, the bobbin thread kept balling up under the bottom fabric. Being a fisherman, I began to look at the problem from that perspective and realized when I had this problem with a fishing reel it was because I overfilled it. I removed several wraps of thread from the bobbin and was able to finally make a good stitch. Reading through the instructions I found how I could adjust the bobbin tension and did as directed. I am now able to completely fill the bobbin and make good stitches. So far the machine seems to do everything I want. I havent tried all the stitches but the zigzag and the others I have tried work great. I am looking forward to using this machine now for my repairs (which is what I basically bought it for) and maybe even progress to actual sewing projects. This seems like a great machine and I would encourage anyone with similar problems to adjust the bobbin tension before giving up. Next I plan on installing a new zipper on a pair of pants.

I'm glad I didn't see all these bad reviews before I bought mine from Walmart. I bought it to replace the Singer Simple that stopped working for me in the middle of a paid order. It worked right out the box. I did have to mess with the tension a bit, but no major problems. It is so much easier, faster, and smoother than my old Singer Simple, I love it!

I'm new to sewing and this is my first sewing machine. I've done a few projects like pillowcases and minky baby blankets and overall I love this machine! The only issue I have had was breaking one needle going over a pin. The needle was very easy to replace...I'm not sure why previous reviewer had such a hard time. My machine came with all instructions and accessories with no missing or open pieces. The machine is quiet and does what I ask it to do. I love it! I can't wait to try out some of the more intricate stitches it comes with.

Great sewing machine! Lots of options but yet easy to use. I have always owned a Singer and probably always will.

This product is very low quality do not waste the money. This company has the worst warranty policy in the universe. A brand new machine does not work, and is not covered, even though I went through the registration process, because I no longer have the original sales receipt. absolute junk, 3 month old machine never worked right out of the box.

I bought this machine 2 weeks ago, and I've been practicing everyday working on wall the stiches, just to make sure they work properly. I've been using thin stretchy fabrics, denim, t shirt material, and a cotton material that was my daughters old Karate uniform, everything in 2 layers. there is no way you can go wrong with threading if you watch the dvd that comes with it, and read the manual, I also read the bad reviews on this machine, and I also bought it from Walmart. I like brother machines, it has great features and everything, I own a Pe 770, PE500, and xr1300 from Brother, and I really like them, but , not talking about the embroidery machine, im gonna say it about sewing machines, they very light in weight telling me that its inside body doesn't have a metal frame wich to me is very important because of the balance of stiches, I know people tend not to like singer because they say is not what they used to be, but its my favorite machines they have the metal frame and plastic, not only plastic . going back to the review everything went fine while sewing on my new singer machine, until I got to the thin and stretch fabric it ate my fabric and jammed the machine. then, I change the neddle for a ball point needle specific made for strachy fabrics, the problem was gone, it sew just fine. witch makes me think if you r using the proper neddles to the proper fabrics and also the threads, I think you're gonna have little trouble, PLEASE READ THE MANUAL AND WATCH THE DVD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.Read more ›

I have owned ONLY Singer machines for 30+ years. Recently purchased the SEW MATE 5400 as it had a stitch function I wanted. I am returning my THIRD Sew mate 5400 machine tomorrow (in just 14 days!) To Walmart. The first had several issues, wrecked several fabrics (ate them) bobbin tension would never adjust correctly, machine made a clunking sound as it stitched, brown thread was intermingled into bobbin thread (not sure WHY this occured? Dirty oil? On ALL 3 machines?!), would not sew through more than 2 layers of fabric, broke several needles (6, and ALL Different sizes, using to test the machine on lightweight/medium weight fabric) in the first hour. Returned to store, the second one had clearly been returned by someone also, ALL documentation inside box had been opened (plastic torn), missing several pieces, had strange "Extras" that were not included as when purchased new, plus red thread stuck in bobbin area from previous use???!!!, this one ate more fabric, tension would not adjust (same issues as with the first)....took that one back, the third one ( A BIG WASTE OF TIME?! Tired of Wasting my time and GAS to return this machine!!) missing the CD (didnt need it anyway really), 1/2-2/3 of the stitch functions did not work AT ALL...ate more fabric, C4 message comes up constantly (bobbin issues), would NOT even wind quilt thread on the bobbin winder, got tangled up so badly I spent an hour cutting it off the bobbin (because TWO of the three bobbins that are "Included" with this machine were missing?!). 3 times, all bad issues, I will NOT Buy this machine again. I am considering switching to another brand, Singer is not the quality they used to be (My last 2 Singers lasted for several years without even one single issue EVER). VERY DISAPPOINTED. Even Better? If you write a review on their site, it does not post until they REVIEW IT first?! In Wasted time, and Gas, I have spent more than this machine is worth.
