The needle threader stopped being useful after two uses and a needle change (needle change was an attempt to fix the above mentioned c4 errors).

Could not even use it as the needle would strike the plate.

I purchased this machine from Walmart but was very skeptical because of the negative reviews I read here. At first I was unable to make a good stitch, the bobbin thread kept balling up under the bottom fabric. Being a fisherman, I began to look at the problem from that perspective and realized when I had this problem with a fishing reel it was because I overfilled it. I removed several wraps of thread from the bobbin and was able to finally make a good stitch. Reading through the instructions I found how I could adjust the bobbin tension and did as directed. I am now able to completely fill the bobbin and make good stitches. So far the machine seems to do everything I want. I havent tried all the stitches but the zigzag and the others I have tried work great. I am looking forward to using this machine now for my repairs (which is what I basically bought it for) and maybe even progress to actual sewing projects. This seems like a great machine and I would encourage anyone with similar problems to adjust the bobbin tension before giving up. Next I plan on installing a new zipper on a pair of pants.

Great sewing machine! Lots of options but yet easy to use. I have always owned a Singer and probably always will.

This is a nice machine with the exception that the thread is constantly jamming from the spool or having tension issues. The tension was generally difficult to adjust. Finally, I opened up the housing and could see thread wrapped so often around a bar inside that it was too tight to be unravelled and in a location nearly impossible to reach. In laboring over this tedious task with a seam ripper, I knocked the tension mechanism out of alignment. Now I will probably have to pay a repairman $90 which is nearly the cost of the machine. Thought I would just bite the bullet and buy another Sewmate but CAN'T FIND THAT STYLE now around the stores here. Maybe it was a close-out? And if so, I'll bet I know why. It would be nice if their repair people didn't charge the cost of the machine to repair it. I will also add that you only get a very basic computer disc and no real operating manual with this machine. It would be nice to have some kind of schematic, as I'm sure this tension arm is an easy thing to repair for my husband. So frustrating.

I'm new to sewing and this is my first sewing machine. I've done a few projects like pillowcases and minky baby blankets and overall I love this machine! The only issue I have had was breaking one needle going over a pin. The needle was very easy to replace...I'm not sure why previous reviewer had such a hard time. My machine came with all instructions and accessories with no missing or open pieces. The machine is quiet and does what I ask it to do. I love it! I can't wait to try out some of the more intricate stitches it comes with.

I bought this sewing machine for my daughter for a Christmas gift. She had never sewn before and has easily taught herself to sew on this machine.

I have owned ONLY Singer machines for 30+ years. Recently purchased the SEW MATE 5400 as it had a stitch function I wanted. I am returning my THIRD Sew mate 5400 machine tomorrow (in just 14 days!) To Walmart. The first had several issues, wrecked several fabrics (ate them) bobbin tension would never adjust correctly, machine made a clunking sound as it stitched, brown thread was intermingled into bobbin thread (not sure WHY this occured? Dirty oil? On ALL 3 machines?!), would not sew through more than 2 layers of fabric, broke several needles (6, and ALL Different sizes, using to test the machine on lightweight/medium weight fabric) in the first hour. Returned to store, the second one had clearly been returned by someone also, ALL documentation inside box had been opened (plastic torn), missing several pieces, had strange "Extras" that were not included as when purchased new, plus red thread stuck in bobbin area from previous use???!!!, this one ate more fabric, tension would not adjust (same issues as with the first)....took that one back, the third one ( A BIG WASTE OF TIME?! Tired of Wasting my time and GAS to return this machine!!) missing the CD (didnt need it anyway really), 1/2-2/3 of the stitch functions did not work AT ALL...ate more fabric, C4 message comes up constantly (bobbin issues), would NOT even wind quilt thread on the bobbin winder, got tangled up so badly I spent an hour cutting it off the bobbin (because TWO of the three bobbins that are "Included" with this machine were missing?!). 3 times, all bad issues, I will NOT Buy this machine again. I am considering switching to another brand, Singer is not the quality they used to be (My last 2 Singers lasted for several years without even one single issue EVER). VERY DISAPPOINTED. Even Better? If you write a review on their site, it does not post until they REVIEW IT first?! In Wasted time, and Gas, I have spent more than this machine is worth.

I have had this machine for 2 years and it is awesome. I no longer have tension problems, buttonholes are no longer feared, and the decorative stitches allow me to be creative or finish seams like a pro. I would never go back to the old Singers. The only complaints I have is the foot control seems less responsive than others I have had and it wiggles as if something is loose. After 2 years it has remained the same and sews fine so I have not worried about this. Also replacing the needle seems a little more difficult than other machines.I am buying another one for my daughter for Christmas this year exactly like mine. If anything messes up on this machine (including me) I just turn it off and back on and it is perfect tension every time.
