This review is from: Singer CG-550 10-Stitch Commercial Grade Sewing Machine
I bought this machine to make decoy bags, ammo boxes, tote bags and other sporting equipment. The first thing I did was try sewing heavy-duty canvas. I kept doubling the fabric until it was to thick to go under the presser foot. It sewed through 12 layers of canvas as if it was sewing a single layer!!! I've sewed canvas, leather, plastic, foam and cardboard without a hick-up.

Not 100% perfect, December 18, 2010
This review is from: Singer CG-550 10-Stitch Commercial Grade Sewing Machine
I got this sewing machine because the price was right and it's called Commercial Grade, making it sound that it's better than a regular home sewing machine. I have an old Singer, a basic home one made out of iron and it has worked fine for me for many years. But I wanted one that made sewing easier and with more professional options.
I am a bit dissapointed. First the cons: If you don't use expensive thread, have the perfect tension, the right needle, it messes up (thread brakes, stitch goes wrong). My old home sewing machine works no matter what. The light is non-existent. I use a lot of "lettuce edge" stitching for hemming and it doesn't have the right foot for it (it has others, made out of plastic, useless to me). The straight stitching foot has a wide slit on it and the fabric keeps on getting stuck in it creating a roll when I try to zig zag. Last, it's made with mostly plastic, so it's not as sturdy as my old Singer.
Now the pros (after all, I am giving it 4 stars). This machine has power. It can sew over several layers of thick fabric easily. Once I got the perfect needle for the type of fabric (the booklet explains this quite well), the right thread, and the right tension it sews almost like a professional power machine. The lack of light situation I solved with an adjustable lamp I owe. The fact that it's made mostly out of plastic makes it light to move around (I almost throw my back out everytime I try to move my old Singer made out of iron).
I am going to look another straight stiching foot, and an special foot for the "lettuce" edge. If I find them, then I'll be happy.
Oh! I have not tried the numerous stitch options my old sewing machine doesn't have. I'm sure I am also going to be pleased with that.
One last remark: I removed the finger protector because it just made it more difficult to sew for me. I have been sewing for a long time, so it's safe. Because this sewing machine has more power than the regular home ones, I would say be extra careful if you remove it too.

tension problems, March 23, 2011
This review is from: Singer CG-550 10-Stitch Commercial Grade Sewing Machine
We bought this machine so that we could sew seat cushions, etc., and it does do just that. It is very loud when you use it (always asking myself if there is something wrong?!?). The stitches are great, it is easy to use, and it does about anything you need it to!
I've had this machine cleaned and serviced 4-5 times in about 2 years. There are numerous problems with it. The culprit is something with the tension - even if you use expensive thread, just the right needle and food and fabric! I go to re-thread it again and again, and put the bobbin in again and again, and nothing works! The tension just has a problem and the top thread bunches up on the underside of the fabric. If you don't catch it right away, the needle will hit, maybe break, and cause timing problems - so you have to go get it fixed again! This seems to be a similar problem among other Singers - a mysterious tension problem.
Look elsewhere for a reliable machine.
