The only problems I've had with this Singer Simple sewing machine have been with tension on the thread. Once I got that figured out, I found that it sews beautifully. I've had it several years and sewn acres of cloth with it, and it has been very durable. If you've had trouble with the thread, I've explained below how I got it to work for me. I hope it helps you, because this machine is wonderful once you figure the thread out.

My husband bought this sewing machine for me because the old one I loved from the 1970's just couldn't be fixed any more. I was so excited to have a new machine, but right from the first I had trouble with the thread. It was easy enough to thread through, but as soon as I sewed, I would get a huge glob of thread on the bottom of the fabric, and it would get stuck down underneath, and I'd have to cut the whole thing out with scissors. Very frustrating. I struggled with it for months, and narrowed the thread problem down to two main things: the bobbin has to be threaded a specific way, and the tensioner on the upper thread sometimes doesn't catch the thread tight.

If the thread balls up underneath the fabric, there is no tension on the UPPER thread. If the thread tension knob is set correctly and there's still no tension on the tread, then the thread isn't seated right in the tensioner. I figured out how to fix it by accident. As I threaded the machine for the umpteenth time, I realized that I had pulled far too much thread out and wanted to not waste it. I took hold of the upper thread and dragged it back toward the spool. Then I realized that I had pulled that too far, so I pulled it down from the needle end again. The thread started to feel as if it had a little drag instead of freely moving, and then when I sewed, it worked perfectly!!!

My mom bought me one of these machines three years ago so I could teach myself how to sew. Right away, I had problems with the bobbin case. The machine snarled the thread, frequently broke the thread, and jammed. I was so new to sewing that I chalked it up to my inexperience with using a sewing machine. I kept fighting the machine, adjusting the bobbin, trying to sew at a slower pace, feeding the fabric very carefully, and taking breaks to swear like a drunken sailor at it!

However, in the years that I've been working with this machine, the bobbin issue has only worsened. This machine has nearly ruined several of my projects recently by jamming, tangling up the thread, breaking the thread, and gnawing on my fabric. I recently started looking for a new machine and I checked the Amazon reviews for this one. There were none, but a nearly-identical model, the 3116f, has many reviews and most of them complain about the same thing: the poorly-designed bobbin case! Clearly, the problem is not the operator, but the machine.

Aside from the bobbin issues, this machine works fine for the most part. All the stitch settings, the foot pedal, and the bobbin winder were fine, but not ideal. The built-in threader is a joke. It never works. The buttonhole maker is disappointing.

If you need a cheap, basic machine as a beginner and you're a masochist who'd like to learn some lessons in patience, then this machine is perfect for you. Otherwise, keep shopping.

I've been "basic" sewing for several decades now. I purchased this machine for simple projects, but wanted the versatility of a few more stitch types, as well as a buttonholer option, and this one seemed to fit the bill. (My old machine was over 50 years old, and only did straight stitches.)

At first I had problems with the bobbin, but it turned out to be operator error. As long as I thread it properly (see the manual, pay close attention to the position and direction of where the thread leaves the bobbin as the bobbin is positioned into the machine) I have had no problems what-so-ever. The only time I have had a problem was when I used a very heavyweight thread, which I believe this machine was not designed to handle.

Stitches are consistent, smooth, easy to change. The buttonholer function works very well. It's not a fancy machine, but if you're looking for a beginner machine, or are a sewer who does not venture too far away from the basics, this machine should work well for you.

I bought this machine used for my eight-year-old to learn how to sew. The former owner had trouble with the bobbin and jamming, so I took this machine off of her hands for very little. I'm glad I did!
I have a lifetime of experience with Singer machines, and this one is not a disappointment. The front-load bobbin is just like the machine I learned on in the mid-80s, and it took only a matter of minutes to adjust the tension and pop it back into the machine, adjust the top tension, and the machine was funtioning properly. After being cleaned, oiled, and adjusted, it was working beautifully.
Now, if you're expecting a quiet machine, this one is not. It reminds me very much of the machines I learned on thirty years ago (it's just prettier and has an automatic threader). I also own a Singer 7258, and by comparison, the 7258 has a drop-in bobbin that is much easier to thread, and is FAR quieter. The 3116 is a noisy machine, but works beautifully for learning and basic mending. It also has helpful features that allow one to go beyond basics, like buttonholes and the ability to drop the feed dogs for darning, change presser feet, and decorative stitching.
A wonderful first machine. My daughter just loves it! I rated it three stars because with today's technology, it could be quiter and the bobbin area could be less touchy to make it easier for beginners. My top loader is not nearly as temperamental. It's not a five star machine, but it does what it says it will do, and does it nicely.
