I picked this up last weekend at Jo-Ann's because I had a fabulous 40% off on regular items coupon. I had eyed this book before, but somehow the DVD inclusion had skipped my view. I brought the book home and gave it a once over and I can tell you this is a great book. It isn't too complex and it hasn't got a million intricate hints and designer touches. THIS IS A GOOD THING. If you are a beginner this book will be of real help and not make you want to give up before you start. The pictures are large and the topics are the ones you need starting with getting to know the basics of the sewing machine. A sensible place to start. The more you know about sewing machines in general and your model in particular the better you will sew. Know your equipment, read the manual and use this book as a reference. I think I could actually use this book to learn to sew if I didn't already know how. The DVD *IS* simple but not too simple. I would have to disagree with the reviewer who said it is too simple for a beginner. Nothing is too simple if it helps explain the techniques clearly. Singer has a way of producing really good books and making learning easier through good photography. I have the Singer Photo guide to Sewing and lots of other sewing books, but this one is going to be one of the two I recommend to very beginners. The other book I recommend is Sew everything Workshop by Rupp. One thing this Singer book has that doesn't appear in almost any other book is instructions to repair your garments, such as repairing zippers, simple hemming, darning etc. Invaluable information. No matter if you just want to have a simple machine for repairs and quick pillows or small jobs, or if you want to start learning and dream of sewing your own wardrobe, this book will start you off right! :) Happy Sewing!

I own all the SINGER sewing books, but this is the best of the modern illustrated guides!

If you don't want to buy all the new illustrated guides- this is a "MUST HAVE"

The mending section is a fabulous guide, & the DVD is a great bonus!

I had a similar book published by Simplicity in the 1970's and figured it was time to update since sewing machines have come along way since then. First, the binding is great because you can stand it up next to the sewing machine and it's printed in "landscape" so it makes it easy to review it in that position. Although I've been sewing forever, there are still a few tips/tricks in there that I'd either forgotten or didn't know before. Really good explanations for using specialized presser feet/needles. Whether its a give for a beginning sewing enthusiast (do they still teach this stuff in Home Ec?) or for somewhat like me whose been creating my own shortcuts, its worth the read... The DVD included is an added bonus.

This is an excellent beginner book - it's detailed and it makes sense. I know another reviewer mentioned that the DVD was too basic for beginners but I completely disagree. The DVD is at times a little dry but has the right amount of detail and clear, slow explanations for complete beginners like me (before buying a vintage Singer 401 on craigslist and this book I had never sewn before) and it was more helpful to me than most of the youtube videos I watched. Overall a really fantastic purchase.

If you are a beginning seamstress, or are looking to expand your skills and understanding, the contents of this book are at least a "4", maybe even a "5". It is logically organized, the illustrations are clear, the instructions straightforward. I've been sewing more than 20 years, so I'm no newbie. But I'm self-taught and I want to expand my skills. I've given myself a new machine and am taking lessons. I bought this book to augment what I'm re-learning, and if it were only about the content, this would be a 4.5 star rating. Unfortunately, the book has a design flaw in it's construction and layout that's a deal-breaker for me.

'Simple Sewing' is a LARGE, almost square book with a spiral binding encased in a hard cover. The pages are laid out so that the binding is at the top of the forward facing pages and the bottom of the back-facing pages. The book flips pages rather than turns them. Ideally, you could lay this book flat (which it is designed to do) and sew-sew-sew. But I could not find a way to make this work. If you angle the book to make it easier to see, it gets in the way of the machine's needle side. Placed on the other side, perpendicular to the machine it's hard to see the whole page. I placed it next to the machine at different angles, but could not get it to a position where I could comfortably see it and use it to sew. I tried to stand it up, but the rigidity of the hardcover made that impossible. It slid flat or the pages flopped up and slid forward or... well, it just wouldn't stay up in a way that pages were visible to be instructive.

I'm disappointed, but in the execution, not the content. However, that construction makes it impossible for me to use it. You may just be able to finagle a placement or a prop that'll make it a '5' for you. Me? I'm already packing it up for return and headed to a brick-and-mortar store, where I'll audition the book before I buy next time.

Finally, the DVD included with this book is the one Singer includes with some of it's machines. It's a very, VERY basic DVD, and not a reason to choose this book over some of the others.

I bought this book because of all the good reviews I read about it in Amazon and because I needed some type of guide for my crafts since I create crafts and sell them online. I do have some sewing knowledge but I basically learned through my grandmother and my mother but I never took a sewing class so there are many tricks I do not know. Besides, my first language is Spanish and I have been trying to learn the sewing terminology in English in order to understand instructions and patterns.

I have to say this book is wonderful, it has pictures and a lot of good tricks that will make your sewing experience much easier. I feel I can definitely use it as a help guide for my sewing crafts/projects and it is very easy to understand even being English my second language.

I highly recommend this book not just for beginners but for intermidiate people as well, there are a lot of good ideas you can use and simple. It is definitely "a must have" if you want to get into sewing. I love "Singer" and I use a "singer sewing machine" as well, they have been my favorite brand although I know nowadays there are so many other good brands I need to look into but this particular book is wonderful.

This is a nice beginner and reference book, but the DVD was too basic even for someone just starting sewing.

The book is large and I don't like the binder; a lot of space is needed to open it up. Upon looking for an answer to a question, the answer was not sufficient.

This is a good reference book for sewing, as it contains illustrations, guides & tips.
If you are a visual learner, or someone who needs memory aids for remembering how to do certain sewing techniques, this would be a good reference book to have. It provides tips & techniques that are most likely to come-up when sewing common items like clothing, or house-hold items.
If you are looking for an advanced, problem solving guide for detailed or elaborate items, then this probably isn't what you are looking for.
If you are a home sewer, someone who likes to make their own clothing, or to adapt/alter clothing from Goodwill or Red Racks, then this is a guide that will come in handy. It is easy to understand as well as easy to use (you can look up what you need quickly).
